Question:
I'm a littler over 4 weeks out from a lap rny and am down close to 30 lbs. However,

over the last few days ANY food other than cream of wheat with 2/3c soy milk repulses me or makes me feel extremely ill.I'm talking eggs, any meat, cheese of any kind, seafood etc...I was prescribed the vitamin Prenate GT by my surgeon and I take that every morning.I have no appetite but will try anything becuase I want to be healthy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.    — E M. (posted on January 12, 2003)

Congratulations on your surgery. As a pre ob who's had VBG years ago I can tell you what I would do. Enjoy the honeymoon, and drink a suppliment drink to ensure you get your vitamins. Your eating tastes will come back eventually so enjoy not being hungry, your stomach is pretty smart and doesn't want much apparently as long as your not throwing up and not getting in vitamin or liquids. Following my last surgery I forced myself to eat certain things, mostly bad things for my body that at first I didn't want to eat but later was able to. I will respect my pouch alot more this go round and just let my stomach be the guide. some links on my profile talk about your stomach pouch if you want to read up on that. always check with your doctor/surgeon if you are concerned tho he's your best advice.

Perhaps it is the vitamin on an empty stomach that is making you feel ill when you eat. Try taking the vitamin after you have eaten. I had alot of nausea for the first 6 weeks or so and like you forced myself to eat but didn't enjoy it. I would suggest that you get a liquid protein drink (they have clear koolaid flavors in addition to the shakes) and sip on that all day to get in your protein. As for food, try soft foods, like cottage cheese, yogurt, tunafish salad on crackers, peanutbutter on crackers, egg drop soup, to see what you can tolerate. Keep in mind that what you cannot tolerate today does not mean that you won't in a few weeks or a few months. Enjoy the no appetite phase-that should last a few months, but unfortunately comes back!
