Question:
Curves for women--opinions? I keep hearing about this place and I'm wondering...

I am just about ready to start incorporating resistance training into my exercise regime. I keep hearing "Curves for Women" mentioned... could I hear opinions on it? Pros/Cons? As always, I appreciate you guys...    — Karen K. (posted on October 28, 2002)

I joined this place a few years ago. I really liked it. You work out in a circle and I think there is like 12 different machines that target different areas of your body. THey play music and every 30 seconds you change stations. In between the machines you just jog in place or do your own thing. I was uncomfortable because of my size and quit going. But I really did like it.

Karen, a co-worker and I joined last year when they had a 3 month special. We liked it because it was women only. However, I went consistently, and did not lose any inches,or weight. And, I was doing the Atkins diet at the time. It's nice because you can get in and out in about 20-30 minutes. We decided not to join completly for a number of reasons, the first being that I didn't feel I got anything out of it. The second was that you have to pay for a year up front, and it's non-refundable. I think they have a payment plan, but it's pretty expensive. Also, even though it was all women, the majority of women that are in there don't look like they need to be (if you know what I mean). So, that made feel a little bit uncomfortable as well. Finally, the hours didn't work well for me. I had much better luck with my local YMCA. I would recommend giving it a try though, perhaps if they a have special where you don't have to commit for a year. I think they have it set up where you can try it free for a week. So, give it a whirl and see what you think. :)

I joined about 1 1/2 yrs ago (when I was on Meridia) and loved it. However, when I started falling of the dieting wagon, I quit going out of embarrassment. But, at my 6-week check-up my Dr. told me to find what ever I would do consistantly, so I went back to curves and I now go M-F everyday before work and also on Saturday mornings. I love it!!! I get my first measurements taken this week and can't wait to see the results! (Open RNY 8/6/02 down 57 lbs.) Also, a previous poster stated that you have to pay for a whole year, not true, there is a registration fee and then a monthly fee of 29.95. But this is something that I can commit myself to. A membership to a gym is just not my thing, I like that fact that there is only women there. Good Luck on your decision, any excerise is great, find what works for you. Oh, I also thought it was so easy at first, but after 1-2 weeks, you really feel what it is working on.

I joined Curves 3 weeks ago with a friend. The only thing that I learned about a year committment was that if you didn't pay with automatic deductions you would need to sign a contract but not pay for the full year. The workout is good. You do 35 seconds per machine then alternate with a 35 second walk/jog, then on to the next machine. You go around 3 times for a total of 30 minutes. Then you have a stretching session at the end. Since I've only been going for 3 weeks, I'm not seeing much "skin toning" but do definitely see muscle improvement. It's fun, quick and not too expensive. Distal RNY 6/5/01 minus 222 lbs

I have to tell you that I LOVE Curves. I joined three months after my open RNY. My first month there I lost 18 lbs, 14 lbs. body fat and 7 inches. I was very impressed at how it works. I can push myself to bust my a** for 35 seconds on ANYTHING. So I feel like I get a much better workout than walking, which I can kinda slack near the end. It may not be for everyone but it is worth a shot. Give it a try. Candi

I belong to a club here in my town, but it's called Kurves For Females!!! it's awesome, the exercise room is equipped with the best weight training machines I have seen around, no other men are allowed except for tanning, it has a steamroom, sauna, whirlpool and of course lots of showers!!! The owner is a builder named Bill( awesome guy, friendly, cute and full of muscles:) he's the only guy allowed in the place, because he's the owner of course!!! except for the tanning booths,, I think the place I go to is different from the other curves, but I love it anyway!!!

I went and checked it out and was gonna join, but really thought hard and decided not to. Sometimes I just like to get on a bike or treadmill, you can't do that their, all you do is the same thing everytime you go, I realized that I would get bored with something like that too. But when I went their were some very big women there, so there was nothin to feel ashamed about and everyone was nice and they did have a payment plan, it just wasn't for me.

I love Curves...I have been going since two months before surgery...I am almost due for another measurement, but I lost over 37 inches last time I checked...I notice after my 52 pound weight loss (Since July) I am not saggy...I think that's why. I go 3-5 times a week and walk the other days I don't make it. I think it is fun, and if you go frequently you get to know a lot of nice ladies to chat with while you are working out. Makes the workout go by faster. Anyhow...only con...the weight machines seem too easy to me, I would like a more aggressive resistance, especially for my upper arms, so I will probably by a set of free weights to use at home.

I joined Curves 3 months post op. I have lost a ton of inches and pounds. I work out at Curves 3 times a week and walk 3 days a week. I enjoy going to Curves as it is only ladies, it is fast, I get a good workout, and they measure and track your progress. Good luck in whatever you decide!
