Question:
Crabby?
Any thoughts on why I'm feeling so crabby? I just don't have patience for much and I'm usually such a happy-go-lucky, very patient type................. I'm not PMS'ing or pre-menopausal.... anyone else experience this? I'm not tired--not really..and not experiencing much discomfort anymore (3 weeks, post-op today). Hmmmmmmmmm..........guess I need to ask my therapist his opinion, but in the meantime, can anyone shed any light? — Karen K. (posted on October 22, 2002)

I'm so glad you asked this question! I am approaching my 1 year
anniversary and I have had several people inform me that I am quite crabby
now (and have been for several months). I can't say that I didn't notice,
but, I didn't think I was THAT BAD. I'm hoping that someone can shed some
light on this for us!

I noticed this too about myself. I have found now that medications effect
my mood (in a bad way). The two main culprits I've noticed that make me
extremely angry are prescrip antacids (prevacid) and otc cold meds like
sudafed. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the way we now absorb
these things...I don't know if this is what's happening to you...but I
thought I'd mention it to see if anyone else expiriences this. Best of
luck. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -136

I get that way evrey so often, it's like you want to be just left alone, and
not bothered huh, I sometimes think it's another side effect of the
surgery, but my husband says it's just me being me at those certain
times!!:) leave it to men!!

I was told to sort of expect this a short time after surgery. Your body is
going through a big adjustment learning to live off your fat and not off
the food you eat. Plus, you yourself, are kind of going through a greiving
process because you have lost your best friend, and security
blanket...FOOD!!! Basically, you are metamorphisizing into the new you and
you have to adjust. If it is a big problem for you see you doctor and let
him decide if you need assistance breaking free of it's hold, but know it
is most likely a temporary situation. Good Luck!!

I believe that all our moods including crabbiness and depression are a
direct result of the hormonal flucations following a major surgery. Your
body is going through a major change and it will take a while for things to
even out.

you know it is funny that you asked i am 8 months post op on the 26th of
this month and i find my self not tolerating anybodys bull and i mean
NOBODIES and before surgery i would just lay down and let everybody walk
all over me, you would think that my body would be use to the change by now
not that i liked it when people would take advantage but im making alot of
enemies nowa dayz LOL!!!!!!!

Thank you for your question. I have to say lately I have also been very
moody! I mean wow! I can go from crying to hateful, head spinning, pea
soup puking type of mean. WOW! My doctor said that it's part of the
depression that we all go through. He has offered to put me on an anti
depressent and when I go for my next appointment we'll discuss it further.
So, it'll get better, but you may want to find out about an anti depressent
that will help just get over the major swings, but not deaden you from
feeling everything.

I'm with Latisha. I use to let people walk over me. Now I'm ready to fight
at the drop of a pin. I won't take anyone's crap ether anymore. Been there,
done that for most of my life. No more! Shit on me and I'll shit back more
than I was given. (To many years of turning the other cheek has finally
caught up with me). But Karen, you are a new post op. You don't feel well
and your body is adjusting. Personally, I don't know what my excuse is. ;)

It was a full moon yesterday...perhaps that's effecting things as well...I
know I am personally affected by this..yesterday was a strange day, perhaps
the begining of a strange week???.....Hang in there...Aims

I wonder if we're really being crabby, or just not putting up with people's
s#!t anymore. I'm only 1 month post-op and I'm already setting boundaries.
It feels good - let those complaining that you're crabby learn to adjust.

I second (or third or fourth..) the not putting up with people's crap or
being a doormat anymore. That's definitely what it was/is for me.
Unfortunately, when your co-workers and boss are used to walking all over
you, they don't necessarily like the "new you." Now, I'm not
saying being more assertive is a bad thing, but it did cost me my job..so
just be careful. I know better things are on the way, but being unemployed
right now it sure makes me wonder sometimes!

At 3 weeks out you are probably experiencing a couple of things that
usually combine to give the new postie the "what have I done to
myself?" syndrome. LOL Hormones, lingering anaesthesia effects, post
op depression, etc. It is all acting on you in mysterious ways. If you were
to graph all the things that are going on in your body it would probably
all bottom out during weeks 3-6! LOL The good news is it won't last. The
bad news is that you are generally not receptive to good news during this
time. :) Good luck. It will get better! ( I know you don't believe me! ;)
