Question:
Has anyone out there ever had Bells Palsy and the gastric bypass?
I was set to have surgery in December, but them the doctor called and said that he had to re-evaluate me because I have had Bells Palsy. — Trisha T. (posted on September 26, 2002)

I have had 2 Bells Palsy "attacks." I put it on my surgery
questionnaire, my surgeon confirmed that I had it but she surgeon didn't
seem concerned with it at all. In fact, I never heard another word about
it. I am almost 5 months post-op. I'm not a doctor but it seemed like
both of my "attacks" were brought on during extreme stress at my
job. Good luck to you. Hugs

Just thought that I would add that Carnie Wilson had an attack of bells
palsey before she had her wls. I just seen her at a seminar tonight in
Tulsa, OK and she mentioned it in her testimony.

My mother is over two years out from Open RNY and she had Bells Palsy in
1990. She has improved, but you can still see the sag in her mouth when
she's really tired or stressed. There has been no noticeable difference
since her surgery. I'm not sure what the concern would be, but I don't
recall her mentioning that her doctor was concerned about her Bells Palsy.

I don't have Bells Palsey, but I do have Parkinsons Disease with fairly
significant tremors and muscle weakness in my legs. I had to get a letter
of clearance for surgery and possible need for ICU from my neurologist in
addition to a cardio and pulmonary workup and standard psych evaluation,
but I was cleared for surgery. Good luck to you - I hope everything works
out OK for you too!

complications at all. My Dr new I had, had it at one time, and it seemed
to be not a concern to him.

I woke up with Bells Palsy on April 24th and was scheduled for WLS June
5th. I was afraid they wouldn't do the surgery, but the doctor said that
one had nothing to do with the other. I am post-op 3 1/2 months and down
83lbs. I still have the Bells Palsy (5 months). What A Pain! I do wonder
if it could somehow be related to WLS? I had to take all alot of
antibiotics for testing positive on that H-Pylori test. I started on the 2
weeks of antibiotics on April 11th, and got the Bells Palsy on April 24th.
If there are other patients out there that have gotten it too, including
Carnie Wilson, maybe there is something to my theory.
