Question:
When should I start working out?
I am scheduled to have my open RNY on 08/26/02. Wow, did not think I would be this nervous. My question is, when cn I start a full exercise plan, not just walking? — Jay J. (posted on August 24, 2002)

When your surgeon clears you to. This is the type of question that you
should be asking him. Typically however, most surgeons remove lifting
restrictions around 2 months.

i started walking the day after surgery - at about 6 weeks i started riding
my recumbent (?) cycle at home and at 9 weeks light weights. at 3 months i
went back to the gym - listen to your body - i could not do sit ups till 9
weeks. i worked out 5 days a week prior to surgery. hope this helps -
good luck! most important - LISTEN TO YOUR BODY -_DON"T PUSH IT - YOU
HAD MAJOR SURGERY

Yeah, this is definitely an "ask your surgeon" question. For
what it's worth, I was on the recumbent bike at home at 3 weeks out, on a
treadmill at the gym at four weeks out, and at 12 weeks out have also
started working with weights that *don't* use my abs (which means
basically, arms), verrry carefully. My doctor teased me that I'd be
running by now, and when no one was looking I ran for about 60 seconds on
the treadmill just recently (but I would've fallen off laughing if I tried
that any longer). Keep on wearing your binder when you exercise even if
you're not wearing it for anything else any more, which will take a few
weeks anyway, until you really feel comfortable *not* wearing it. I admire
the person who answered and said they're doing sit-ups...I can tell my abs
want no part of that and won't for a long time yet, plus I'm still not
cleared for that (maybe because I was an open RNY, 5/30/02).
