Question:
Anyone have any articles on WLS medications?
Hi. I have been reading in the library about the different meds that we should take and stay away from. Does anyone have any medical readings or articles that supports any of this data. I mentioned this to my nutritionist and she seemed surprised that there were any meds for WLS patients to stay away from. I don't know if I worded it wrong to her, or if she misunderstood me. She is very good regarding the foods, so I am wondering if there is something that I can bring to her showing her that I am not crazy. Thanks. — Erika B. (posted on August 15, 2002)

I don't know of any articles, but there are a couple of websites out there
that specifically mention which meds to avoid -- print them off and give
them to your dietician.

The following list was given out in a post on the Yahoo Groups - OSSG list
(#76094). I wrote the writer and asked where she got her info... she told
me that Bariatric Treatment Centers hand out a leaflet explaining what's
okay:
"Medications that are not to be taken include the following:
Motrin/Ibuprofen
Aspirin/Salicylate
Pepto-Bismol
Non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs or any medications containing the
above.
Medications that are recommended:
Colds:
Robitussin
Dimetapp
Tylenol Cold Products
Triaminics (any)
Sudafed
Benadryl
Safetussin
Mild Pain:
Tylenol
Tylenol Extra Strength
Gas:
Gas-X
Phazyme
Constipation:
Milk of Magnesia
Colace
Peri-Colace
Dulcolax -- suppositories
Glycerin suppositories
Fleets Enema
Diarrhea:
Immodium AD
NOTE: Obtain sugar free forms of medication when possible. Every patient
tolerates sugar in medications differently."
Good luck and always check with your surgeon regarding any medications,
Kristine
