Question:
What is the difference between the RNY and old gastric bypass? I know people who hav
gained all their weight back after having WLS years ago. I'm concerned because I have lost 100 lbs. a couple of times in the last 10 years only to regain it all plus some. — YvonneBryant (posted on May 18, 2002)

Sherry: Current stats on the RNY are that about 80% of RNY patients are
able to keep off 60%+ of their excess weight after 5 years. Not great, but
much better than any diet plan I've been on! LOL Yes, it is possible to
regain weight, but if you use your tool, the chances are slim that you will
ever be even near as big as you were to begin with. I have gone from 407
to 226 (so far) and still losing. I aim to get anywhere below 200 and to
maintain this loss for the rest of my life. I think the exercise and
eating habits I have developed in the last year will really help me in this
goal.

Do you mean the old intestinal bypass? Or the original stomach stapling
(horizontal?)? Or the vertical stapling? Each one is very different and
every doc does a different version of the RNY (gastric bypass). Some do a
one-size-fits-all, some customize to the patient. It's up to you to dig
around, hear all of our opinions, factor in our prejudice toward our own
surgeries, and go from there. I've lost 150#, or 100% of my excess and
kept it off. My surgery was 10/94. Of course I think mine's the best and
my post-op nutrition has held me here. But I don't think my surgery is the
best FOR EVERYONE if they are not willing to hold onto my post-op plan,
too. So, dig, dig, dig. Ask, sift through the answers. Join the Grad
list and see into the future.
