Question:
I have BC/BS - the Federal plan; I am at least 120 lbs. overweight, only comorbiditi
are reflux, back, hip and knee pain. Is that enough to qualify? — YvonneBryant (posted on May 17, 2002)

According to Dr. Roll's office in VA, if you have no comordities, but have
a BMI of at least 40, you will almost automatically qualify. I have not
yet been able to confirm this since my first consult is 30 days away, but
my understanding is BCBS FEP is good about the surgery. Take care.

When your PCP writes the letter of recommendation, have him/her mention
your current health problems and THEN approach it in a PREVENTIVE manner,
such as diabetes is in the family history and is lurking around the corner,
etc. I too have BC/BS Federal govt.-wide plan and they don't pre-approve
but I've never heard of anyone who didn't pay out after the surgery. You
can research our plan on this site and you'll see. Good luck on your
journey.

BC/BS FEP paid for my OpenVBG last June (2001). I was 340 lbs, BMI 47, and
a couple of comorbidities.
Then - day before yesterday (May 16) I had my Abdominoplasty - paid for by
BC/BS FEP also....(yes I'm home and feeling good - very sore - but
otherwise great!)

I had BC/BS Federal and they paid for my RNY last July with no problems. I
was 27 years old, 266 pounds, and my only co-morbidities were back and knee
pain, shortness of breath with exertion, and family history of heart
disease and diabetes. I think they look at it as preventative. You should
have no problem. Best of luck to you.
