Question:
DID ANYONE LOSE LARGE AMOUNTS OF HAIR AFTER SURGERY EVEN IF THEY WEAR THEI HAIR NATUR

I AM 2 MONTHS POST OP AND I WORRY ABOUT THE HAIR LOSS. I WEAR MY HAIR SHORT AND NATURAL. I CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE ANY HAIR CONSIDERING I DON'T HAVE MUCH TO BEGIN WITH. I HAVE SEEN MANY POSTINGS IN REGARDS TO HAIR LOSS BUT NEVER FROM ANYONE BLACK. ANY SUGGESTIONS?    — donna R. (posted on May 9, 2002)

My doctor told me that as long as you get enough protein you shouldn't have any hair loss. Good luck!

I have seen so many posts about post-op hair loss. I'm convinced that either you'll lose it or you won't and it probably doesn't have a lot to do with protein intake or which vitamins you take or what shampoo you use or any of that. The most important thing, it seems, is that most everyone says it does grow back.

I am not Black, but maybe can offer useful advice anyway, since I am pretty sure hair loss can happen to both black and white post-ops. Anyway, I didn't think I'd lose any hair, but when I hit my 5th month post op, it was falling out like crazy. I mean, it was coming out in clumps. It made me very nervous, but I tried to keep it in perspective. I knew that it would stop eventually, and it did stop falling out around the 8th or 9th month. So please just bare with it, and know that it will not keep falling out. Don't brush or comb it too much.

Donna, as an african american female,(I went into surgery with braids)--the trauma of the surgery, the anesthesia, and the malabsorption all contribute to hair loss. It helped me to be faithful to my multivitamin/mineral supplement--i take one morning and night. My hair has stopped "sheading" and is getting thicker and stronger--it did take about 8-9 months. let me know if i can help. rita

I am an African American woman and I am 3 months post-op. My hair started falling out alot! maybe 3 to 4 weeks ago, I have up my protein and my vitamin intake and yet it seems to get worse. I hope it will stop soon, but for now I have decided no more relaxers or harsh hair products. Lap RNY 1/16/03, -70lbs. :)

I am African American and did begin to loose my hair. I began taking my vit. regularly and adding vit b1 500 mg aday and a vit 12 for about 2 months. I didnt pull, comb or brush my hair, only fingered it to put in it a shape. I also washed it 3 times a week. Yes 3 times a week. Best of luck

I have one tip I didn't see in the postings. I take Biotin 5mg once a day. Have taken it since before surgery because I started losing hair for other reasons pre-op. It's a vitamin, good for both hair and skin. I lost hair post-op, but not as much as I expected. I'm now 20 months out and my hair is getting thicker again and has more body than before. My skin is doing better than expected, too. Be sure to take 5 milligrams, which is 5000 mcg. If you don't take enough it won't help. No side-effects at all. I asked my pharmacist about it before I started taking it. He said it won't hurt anything so why not.

I definitely agree with the first response you recieved. Biotin 5 mg really make a big difference. Also I like using Sulfur 8 light hair grease on my hair and/or minoval hairdress on my edges. That seems to work for me. But I did have to learn the hard way of course. I suggest do not put any hair dye in your hair unless it is a rinse and if you are use to perming your hair every 2 months wait a extra month or 2 weeks. In other words, lessen the frequency. I am 2 years and 4 months post op. Any way wish you blessings.

I am an African American woman with very short relaxed hair. I am 9 months post op and have had no hair loss at all. Lack of protein can lead to some hair loss within the first 2 months post op because of the post op diet. Once you are on solid foods and increasing your protein to 40g or more per day, whatever your dietician recommended, the hair loss should slow down or stop all together. I've also read that Biotin is helpful. Also, try Aphogee treatments, it's wonderful for preventing breakage.
