Question:
It's been one week and two days since my srugery and I am still dealing with drain

age coming from my incision. It's red of course but I don't think infected. I'm trying to keep it clean, but will this stop eventually???    — David B. (posted on April 11, 2002)

I had drainage coming out of my incision for almost 3 weeks. The surgeon said that was sometimes common, especially for people who are as heavy as I was. It is just part of the healing process and as long as it is just blood or clear, then it should be ok. If it is pussy, though that could be the sign of a serious infection. If you are concerned about it, call your Dr.'s office.

I hope you have better luck than me, because I started draining ten days post op and continued for almost five weeks. If it doesn't smell, you don't have a fever, and the color of the fluid appears normal then you'll be fine. It's fat necrosis...basically, the fat damaged by the surgery is breaking down, dissolving and trying to leave ASAP! :) Keep it covered when you have to, uncovered when you don't so it can dry out a bit. Good luck and congrats on your surgery!
