Question:
Well I think I dumped but it I felt real bad and sick for about 6 hours before

I decided to go to the ER. They didn't find anything wrong with me. Maybe an ulcer(from taking so much vicodin maybe) So I'm wondering if I could possibly have dumped that long. I felt fine the next day. My stomach is alittle sensitive. Even drinking water makes it rumble like it's mad. Then food makes it roll around and I get this "here we go again" feeling. I don't want to go back to the hospital. I can see where the fear of this is going to keep me inside my house for a while.I have been taking prilosec but I don't really see a change in that. Maybe i need to give it more time. Keep the advice coming. I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong. My surgeon figures he has done his job - now don't bother him. Wish I would have chosen a better surgeon. Oh well, I have this list.    — [Anonymous] (posted on October 28, 2001)

Describe what's going on. Where does it hurt? Nausea? Heart palpitations? How long after eating does something (what?) happen? Gurlging is pretty common for us, and I do it, even after 7 yrs, but not constantly. Certain things make me gurgle always, and then other stuff is hit 'n miss. Dumping, though, is a pretty specific set of symptoms.

I'm the poster. Here were my symptoms. Stomach cramps started at 8 in the morning. Sort of like I had gas and just needed to get rid of it. The pain kept getting worse. By about 3:00 in the afternoon the pain had gotten unbearable. I took 2 vicodin throughout the day thinking that would relieve the pain, but it didn't. Went to the ER they did a bunch of tests. Said my surgery was fine. I was dehydrated (they couldn't find a vien to put the IV into.)and that I could have an ulcer. See my surgeon next week. They gave me prilosec. Saw my doctor this morning and he seems to think it was a combination of the vicodin and dehydration. But I'm still taking the prilosec. My stomach felt much better the next day. Still get that twinge. When I eat something it feels like it is hitting a totally empty stomach. You know, that kind of pain you get if you drink something or eat something real early. And it growls while I'm eating. Not before. I think my stomach has a mind of its own and when I eat its growling "bring it on!" All my blood tests were fine. No pancriatitis, no bowel obstruction, no leak. But they advised an endoscopy. Which I'm not looking forward to. To see where the ulcer might be if I have one. I am completely transected incase that helps. Oh, I had my surgery 8/27 and I'm down 45 pounds. I am loosing slow I think. But I'm not worried about that. I figure the slower I loose, the less skin I'll have hanging.

While I can't tell you what happened, I can tell you that I don't think it was dumping. Dumping occurs pretty much right after(an hour or so at most) you've eaten a trigger food and is a feeling of light-headedness, weakness, gotta lay down or I am going to faint. It may or may not involve nausea and vomiting and isn't usually painful. Just cold and clammy, faint, and headachy. Hope you figure it out soon. Stick to soft foods for a few days and see if it settles down. Hang in there!

Don't be afraid of the scope. I get those without hesitation, kinda like we go to the doc with the old sore throat & cough? Better safe than sorry. You're out for a half hour or so, so you'll miss the whole thing. I've been subject to ulcers since I was a teenager, and the marginal ulcers I've had since WLS have cleared up much more quickly than did the "real" ulcers I had previously. Hopefully, this will have a happy ending very quickly for you. You didn't say if your bowels worked normally, but I suspect your doc already asked the question.
