Question:
Has anyone with Kaiser been asked to lose weight pre-op
and gone for their pre-op appointments and had their surgery cancelled for not losing weight?? — [Anonymous] (posted on October 7, 2001)

I had mine done through Kaiser in May. They wanted to see I could maintain
my weight for a period of time (6 months, which they had on record) but had
never been asked to LOSE weight. I would continue to push for this; Kaiser
is known for being EXTRAORDINARILY difficult when it comes to approving
this. To approve and then cancel seems cruel. I wish you luck!

As far as the guidelines for Kaiser I think that all depends on what area
you reside in. Like me I have Kaiser Mid-Atlantic and was able to get an
approval within a week with no hassle or weight loss requirements. But I
have heard about others on the west coast having to jump through hoops.

Hi, I also have Kaiser Northern CA and have not been asked to lose 10% of
my weight. I think it must have something to do with your BMI...I have a
fairly low BMI, 41, and perhaps that's why. Hugs, Joy

Losing weight before surgery for Kaiser patients is a new thing in the last
few years. The surgery used to be excluded, but now they will approve it,
but you must take their weight loss class and see the nutritionist, at
least this is what happens in Oregon. My best friend had Kaiser and that
is what she has to do. She gets a bit discouraged and feels that she wont
have surgery for years, but will do what she has to. I think the notion is
strange at best.

I was told I need to lose 120 lbs. by Kaiser. I am sooooo frustrated with
them. The nurse said they offer a supervised liquid diet.
