My mom had WLS (mason shunt) in 1976 and she is in her 50's now. She is
healthy and has kept the majority of her weight off. There have been a few
health issues come and go, and some that are constant, but for the most
part she is fine.

I just visited a friend this weekend who will be 10 yrs out on December 6
and is 52 yrs old. She has had some health problems, not WLS related,
Carpel Tunnel and Fibromyalgia. She was on some steroids for these
ailments and gained some weight but has shed 20 of those lbs currently.
She had maintained her weightloss up until last year when she went on those
meds. I asked her if she felt like the weight came off easier as a result
of her "tool" and she said absolutely. If she had never had the
surgery she'd still be carrying around those extra lbs as she always had
such a hard time losing any weight. She still does 5 small meals a day, no
drinking with meals etc. She still says you have to work for your tool to
make it work for you. She also says WLS is still the best thing she ever
did for herself. Oh yeah, I did happen to remember she had a bowel
obstruction at about 7-8 years out. I have no idea if that was WLS related
or not, it was repaired surgically and she was fine. Hope this helps and
sorry it was so long. Robin Lap Rny-9/17/02...290/136/135
