Question:
17 days post op - gained two pounds?????

I am 17 days post op. Last Friday, I went for a 10 day post-op check-up and had lost 21 pounds. I stepped on the scale today and had gained two pounds. I know it's not a lot, but why does this happen???    — stacey L. (posted on May 16, 2002)

i noticed than when you said you stepped on the scale today you did not say that it was the same scale that you got on the first time, which would make me think it was a different scale so i would say that most likely you did not gain 2 pounds. when you dont weigh on the same scale you will get all kind of numbers because all scales are different.just like my "100.00" digital scale i weigh in at the doctors office and it says 293 and as soon as i get home my scale says 271!!!! go figure! try to always weigh yourself on the same scale oh and by the way this same scale i have here said that i went from 341 to 303 in 5 days but when i weighed on my doc scale on 9 days post op i was really only -17 so dont worry your doing great

Don't feel bad! When I was 3 weeks post-op I gained 2 lbs also! I was so upset! I swore I would drink all my water and eat 1 grape a day! :-) The next week I lost the 2 lbs and another 3. I've lost 164 in almost 8 months now...so that 2 lbs weight gain hasn't really affected me! You're doing fine!

Stacey, throw that scale away. I often read Leo The Late Bloomer to my class. The moral of the story is mainly for adults, but the kids love it too, and it states, "A watched bloomer will never bloom." If you watch a scale, you'll never see a great weight loss. Forget about the scale and concentrate on exercising and eating right. Only weigh once a month at a friends house, or put your scale up somewhere you won't see it. Good Luck!

I SOOO agree with the poster who advised you to throw away your scale. For the first 9 months post-op, I only weighed myself at doctor's visits, every 30-45 days or so. Consequently, each time I weighed, I had lost 10+ lbs. and felt really great about myself. Even now, at 13.5 months post-op, I only weigh myself every two weeks so I can actually see a change. So much with me is psychological. If I think I'm doing bad, I will have a self-esteem crisis and do even worse. If I think I'm doing awesome, I have a good self-esteem and continue doing good things. Make sense? Don't worry ... your weight will come off after WLS. I don't know many who totally fail at this. Even the ones who think they have failed lose 100 lbs. instead of 125 or whatever ... which I don't consider to be a failure at all.

I posted the same sort of message right after my surgery and took the posters advice and took the scale back to the store I had bought it from. I haven't even weighed since the 9th day - not officially anyway...ever since my scale said something EXTREMELY different. I started measuring my inches instead - I've kept a weekly journal on my profile on how that is coming along and it's really uplifting to see the measuring tape go down each week. I'll check again on my 7-week check up and I'll post my weight there but I too will only weigh at my doctors office. Good luck to you, friend ~ know your doing just fine.
