I am approximately 10 months post-op from a Lap proximal RNY. I was
lactose intolerant after the surgery and could not tolerate any dairy
products. I used soy and lactose free products (they are available in your
grocery right next to the dairy). The lactose intolerance is starting to
resolve and I can now tolerate cheese.

I'm 5 months postop and became lactose intolerant after WLS. I can't go
near milk (not even skim), sour cream or soft cheese (like Cheez Whiz or
Velveeta). I've tried taking Lactaid with them and it helps with the
stomach cramps and diarrhea but I still get horrible gas and gas pain...so,
I stay away from these. I've found that I can eat hard cheese (like block
or shredded cheese) and yogurt without any problem. I can eat a little bit
of sugar free ice cream if I take some Lactaid. I haven't tried Lactaid
milk. I have soy milk on my cereal and find that I don't really miss milk
at all.

I am lactose intolerant, and as you said, milk and cottage cheese make me
sick. But, there are low-lactose dairy products. Hard cheeses, like
cheddar and mozzerella have very little lactose in them. Check the label
for sugar grams, since all the sugar in cheese is likely to be lactose.
Yogurt may do ok because the bacteria cultures in it consume most of the
lactose. And, of course, there is lactaid milk which has most of the
lactose removed. I have to stay completely away from regular milk, skim or
not, and the no-sugar-added icecreams too. Some other things, like cheese
spread, I can eat if I take some lactaid tablets with it. Hope this helps.

I was lactose intolerant before my surgery, so it wasn't a big deal
post-op. I've always been able to eat yogurt and hard cheeses though. I
vaguely remember someone telling me that it had something to do with the
cultures. I'm not positive though.

I've been milk free for nearly 6 yrs. Had become lactose intolerant before
surgery, but didn't quit using it! DUHHHHHHH. I use the little packets of
non-dairy creamer in beverages and use non -dairy whipped topping (which
has about 1g of sugar per serving) or a dry product called Better than
Milk. Since we are off milk products for life (they are designed to fatten
up babies), it isn't a big deal to go on without it. Be sure to read all
labels and even the Lactaid products may contain too much sugar for good wt
loss. Of course, you were supplementing your protein & calcium anyway,
but just be sure these are closely monitored, since our condition makes us
high risk, whether we tolerate milk or not. I do cheese, but not "soft
cheese"; yogurt, but only extremely low sugar; sour cream or IMO; and
if I simply MUST have a bite of "ice cream", Tofutti Cutes do the
trick for me.
