Question:
I'm 2 years post op and have horrible hip pain.
I can't bend over, tie my shoes, put socks on, get up and down from chairs. The pain is horrible. Didn't have this 120 lbs ago. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Xrays show signs of arthritis but doc thinks it could be my lower back as well. Also he said it could be due to losing so much weight. He wants to start me on physical therapy. Anyone else experience anything similiar? Did your pain ever go away? I'm 38 and feel like i'm 80. 280/160/145 — KellyL (posted on May 25, 2005)

Have you ever had problems with your sciatic nerves? I've had that
problem, and it is very painful in the hips. My first problem with the
sciatic nerve was due to too much weight on my body, I went to a
chiropractor and he worked wonders. Then I had problems after I lost weight
( I will be one year out on June 22.) My doctor said that sometimes your
body alignment can not keep up with the rapid weight loss. So, I went to
the chiropractor again and it has worked wonders again. Every now and then
I'll have to go for an adjustment. I hope this helps you, at least it
might be worth checking into. Just an FYI, my first visit took about a
week and a half of appointments to get my hip feeling better. But the
Chiropractor will take Xrays and be able to determine if he/she can help
you. Good luck

I agree with the prior post. I have problems with my sciatic nerve (plus
other stuff) but when it started I went to a chiropractor (cause the PCP
just wanted to put me on drugs) and he did x-rays (and eventually he
ordered an MRI) and was very detailed and told me everything step-by-step
and like the prior post it did take awhile to help but it did help and
whenever I feel pain I get back in for an adjustment and I walk back out
feeling like new. Good Luck, Kelly

Yes, before surgery I had all kinds of aches and pains. but since surgery I
now have hip pain in my righthip that i never had before. The xray did show
some arthritis and I was already taking Vioxx (then bextra and now mobick)
for the arthritis, but even with that some days are really bad. It could be
the way the skin hangs from the stomach, but I wonder? My stomach os so
much smaller now, how can it cause more pain? Let me know if you find any
solution to this. Cathy

I was only about 245 lbs before surgery. After I lost weight and my weight
stablized, I started to have constant, nagging back pain. Here I was,
feeling energetic and moving more easily, but I was limited by the back
pain! It was there when I got up and there when I went to bed. Nothing
helped - exercising, not exercising, etc. I took Vioxx, which helped. I
finally decided I needed an abdominoplasty, after doing a lot of reading.
So, once I got the insurance company to cover it, I had it done and there
is not a day that goes by that I am not thankful! I had a lot of muscle
reconstruction and only 5-6 lbs of tissue removed. However, I now have the
abdominal support and no pain at all anywhere! According to the American
Academy of Plastic Surgeons, 10 lbs of extra abdominal tissue puts 100 lbs
of strain on the lower back!
Keep in mind also, that weight loss also changes your posture. Muscles and
joints that were "used to" supporting all that additional weight
are being changed to different positions to accommodate the change in
dynamics. The abdominoplasty helped there, too. Something to think about!
