Question:
My RNY is next Monday and I need suggestions on how to remove my wedding rings for
for surgery. I have gained so much weight that they have their own little indentation, and I know if I start tugging on them, my finger will swell. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what do to to get these rings off? — jeanlewis (posted on December 16, 2004)

Dish soap or Crisco on your finger, then hold your hand up over your head
for a while (to reduce the swelling) as you try to get them off -- but if
you can't get them off, I think the main reason for getting them off is so
nobody steals them -- if you can't get them off, I doubt anyone else will
be able to either.
My rings are all too big now, and I'm not at goal yet -- so long as all
they do is roll around (I can't keep the stone sides up) but don't slip off
past my knuckle too easily, I'm going to wait to get them resized. My
anniversary ring got moved from my right ring finger to my right middle
finger and it's still way too big! My engagement and wedding rings fit
better on my left middle finger, but that just feels wrong ... so I'm just
careful to not let them slip too far. Ah, the joyous tribulations of
weight loss!

Dish soap (not over an open drain), if that doesn't get them off, have them
taped around your finger(s) for surgery, and after you loose a little they
will come off..

Jean, you may not need to take them off. Some hospitals will put surgical
tape over the rings to indicate that you still have them on. If you are
still having problems getting them off even after trying the other poster's
suggestions then call your surgeon's office and tell them the problem, I am
sure that they deal with that issue all the time. Or maybe call the
hospital and see what they say. An early welcome to the other side, good
luck.

Take a length of string and wrap it tight around your knuckle about 20
turns. Now thread the end of the string through the ring and slowly pull
the ring. It will ease the ring off your finger as the string
unwinds...JR

I hope all of the great ideas that have been posted here work for you!
Mine wouldn't budge a bit, so I went to the jeweler and had them cut off.
The plus is that later on after I'd lost a substantial amount of weight,
they had to be sized down anyway, so it worked out fine. Now I've lost
even more weight, and they're too big - who could have guessed! LOL! My
husband also had WLS, and his wedding ring is getting too big now, too. He
just mentioned something about new rings.... hmmmmm.... :)
Blessings,

Believe it or not, my jeweler always has glass cleaner on hand. It works
great. Try it and see if it works for you. Mine just slides right off. Good
Luck, Sharon

I know this will sound GROSS, but saliva is the BEST lubricant in the
world. Give it a try.

Try lathering your finger with vaseline and the rings should pull off
easily.

I had the same problem. Don't worry, they will put tape over them. Best
wishes for a speedy recovery.
