Question:
Could post-op vitamin deficiencies cause the skin to be fragile?

My most recent blood tests showed deficiencies of vitamins D and K, and I've noticed that my skin seems to be "tearing" easily lately--getting scraped off on surfaces that aren't even sharp. Is there likely to be any connection?    — Virginia N. (posted on September 7, 2004)

Well, both of these are fat soluble vitamins and fat is good for the skin. You may need to increase your intake of good fats (olive oil, flaxseeds, avacados, etc... do a google search for a list of good fats). RNYs malabsorb fats anyway and if you have cut back on eating fat as part of your post-op diet, you may be getting even less. Just remember to take these vitamins in dry form, and not the oil capsules.

I believe vitamin K is to keep the blood from not clotting so I can that there could be tearing or bleeding or bruising with a lowvlevel. I do not know of any vit K supplements or what foods have vit K. They give vit K to people onanticoagulants that need surgery so they don't bleed too much, but I think that's an IV dose. Do a web search, I bet you'll find info. Vitamin D is important to help absorb calcium. With out it you canget osteopenia which is bone loss which could cause fractures. Some calcium supplements have vit D in it or you could get a prescription for higher doses of it. Good luck.
