Question:
I've never seen this question before. I'm a little over 2 months
post-op and from time to time have gotten sick from chicken or tunafish. Most of the time it doesn't bother me but I guess sometimes I either eat too fast or too much. I usually can keep it down for about an hour but it just sits there and keeps talking to me until I "let it go". My question is: Do you think I am getting any protein absorbtion before I throw it up and should I not count those grams of protein for the day? Things that make you go Hummm...??? — Jill H. Fran is right - if it comes out it doesn't count. The reason is that our
food is absorbed in our small intestine and if you can "let it
go" it hasn't made it there yet.

I doubt it, but I am almost 6 months post op and still have trouble with
chicken......DR says its because its so stringy. So I try to cut it up in
very small pieces and do much better that way.

I am 9 1/2 months out and chicken and tuna still give me trouble every so
often, especially if it is too chunky or dry. I think it is a texture
thing.

Do you by chance use sweet relish? The sugar in sweet relish can make you
dump. Also is your chicken salad home made or store bought? I use a mini
food processor to grind the chicken real fine and it slides right through,
I have noticed store bought has some pretty big chunks and could be getting
stuck, you could put that in a processor too and see if that helps, and
store boughten might have sugars in it too, or maybe you cant handle the
type of mayo you are currently using. , and if you throw it up dont count
it.
I hope this good luck and enjoy the ride:0)

Over the last year, I have learned that many people on this website have
problems with Chicken. I know I have problems 9mos post-op. I do ok with
tuna as long as it has low-fat mayo mixed in it.

Ditto on the "you can't count the protein". Don't necessrily
blame yourself if you can't always eat chicken or tuna. I'm 8 1/2 months
out, and usually chicken is just fine. Other times, though, and for no
apparent reason, chicken or turkey will make me sick--for hours. It
doesn't seem to be connected to how it was cooked, who cooked it (at home
or out), what I ate with it, the time of day when I ate it, or anything
else. It's just that sometimes pouchy isn't interested. I've learned not
to order chicken if I'm out, just in case, so I don't ruin an evening. It
might get better as you go out, but you might always have the potential for
trouble, too. Don't worry about it, it's normal for many of us to have
problems with some kinds of foods. When that happens, just try something
else.
