Question:
Do the over the counter drugs used to treat H-Pylori work as good as the prescribed?
I have been prescribed a drug to treat (H-Pylori) ulcers. I cannot afford it because it costs $190.00. Can anyone tell me if the over the counter drugs will do as good? Can I still have WLS if I don't get this treated with the prescribed drug? — mspisces (posted on July 30, 2003)

I think H-Pylori is a bateria, and is treated with an antibiotic. That
isn't something you can buy over the counter.

I agree with the previous poster (and yes your surgery can be cancelled if
you still test positive for it)...but I'm confused. You have medicare -
why won't they cover the antibiotics?

Medicare DOES NOT cover ANY type of medications or prescriptions. This is
something that congress is trying to address.

I too have just been diagnosed with H-Pylori. I was prescribed two
anti-biotics and prevecid. My insurance would not cover the dosage amount
that my doctor was requiring.(I am having surgery on Aug 6) He gave me
samples(Prevecid) from his office. Call your doctor and let him know this.
Im not sure what medication he gave you but it is worth a try. He may even
be able to prescribe you something a little less expensive. Good luck!
