Question:
I'm hoping this will go away. I am 6 weeks out and cannot eat anything.
Everything is gross to me. This is just starting to happen. Up until now, I was able to eat without making it a chore. Anytime I eat I want it to be over. I cannot eat protein bars anymore nor can I stomack the drinks. Has anyone had a similiar thing happen to them? Will it go away? I know I need to eat to lose the weight but its so hard. I'm finding that I end up not eating at all. Help! — KellyL (posted on May 5, 2003)

I haven't had this problem but was at a support group meeting where my
surgeon talked about this. If you are having problems he said to go back
to soft or liquid foods and kind of start over. Try to get the protein in
but the most important thing is to eat what you can.

Kelly, many people go through this. You mentioned how eating feels like a
chore, and you almost have to force yourself to eat right? This is commonly
referred to as the "honeymoon" period after WLS. The first 6
months you lost the most weight and don't want to eat. It happened to me as
well, and I felt horrible at the time. Made myself eat just so I could get
the protein, but never enjoyed food. God do I miss those days now! lol it
will fade away and you will gain an appetite eventually. So although you
hate being like this now- enjoy it while it lasts! As long as the protein
doesn't actually make you throw-up or anything, keep eating it even if you
don't want to, we need as much protein as we can get! Goodluck to you!

You don't mention anything about real solid food. Can you have any of this
yet? If not I don't have any good suggestions as I never use Protein
drinks. I can give you some good ideas for foods that are pretty easy on
the pouch if you are able to eat foods.

I am 6 weeks also and I am experiencing the same thing. I HATE to eat...it
really is a pain. But I can tell that my body needs nourishment (I get
shaky and moody at times). I am faithfully drinking 2 protein shakes a day
for a total of 60 grams of protein and am trying to eat some cottage cheese
and string cheese and some lunch meat at times. I can completely relate. I
went to the doctor today and he said that I need to eat more and more
often. It is not as easy said than done. I really suggest finding a protein
drink that works (and that is the hard part). I have fallen in love with
the Real Meals shakes and that has made a difference. I wish you the best
and hang in there.

Are you feeling sick? Or just turned off to food. If your having
troublegetting stuff down or keeping it down you might have a stricture and
need scoped and possibly dialated.

Kelly, I'm almost 8 weeks post-op and am in the same boat as you. Everyone
tells me this will pass. I really hate food. I have to force myself to eat.
And when I eat, I don't eat much. Nothing taste good.I was told it was
caused by the ketosis. My doctor said this is normal. Just be patient.

I know you don't want to hear this, but enjoy this phase while you can, as
it will not last. By 6 months or so post-op most of us regain our
appetites, regretfully. This will pass, so you must try to find some
foods/drinks that you do like to tide you over until your able to eat more.
Drinking is most important of all-get in that water. Too many new
post-ops end up in the hospital dehydrated.
