Has anyone tasted blood in your mouth after surgery? — D. Cornell L. (posted on March 6, 2003)

Do you mean right after surgery? As in, you were still in the hospital? If
so, then yes. In fact I vomited later the same day of my surgery. It
consisted entirely of blood. But even before that the taste was in my
mouth. The nurse told me it was pretty common, especially with all the
tubes that were down my throat during surgery. I hope that answered your
question.

I didn't, but I heard it has to do with your iron intake. Ask your surgeon
or surgeon's nurse about it to be sure...Take care!....Karen (lap rny- 5

I know in the hospital I did and a few days after I was home. It actually
happened when I belched, it tasted like blood but no blood ever came up. It
made me sick to my stomach but it stopped very soon afterwards. They cut
your stomach, tubes down your throat, etc. so I would expect that there be
some blood around somewhere...

I have tasted blood every time I've had surgery...BUT... I would not take
that as 'normal' for you. If you are concerned about this, please call
your doctor. There are any number of reasons why this could be happening,
and any of them may be something your surgeon prefers to talk to you
about.
If it is severe enough to make you sick, definitely tell the doctor that.
Take care!
