Question:
Post Op Pancreatitis and/or Hernins- Anyone Else?

Just had an upper endoscopy yesterday and the doc that performed it thinks I may have pancreatitis. Had lap rny 08/01 (reached my goal!!) then developed a fistula between my pouch and old stomach 10/02 which I had re-stapled. The endo for the fistula showed my pouch was really dark red and swollen. The endo yesterday shows that my pouch is ok but my upper intestine is dark red and swollen. I know I've been checked for pancreatitis and my wls surgeon thinks I may have an internal hernia. Has anyone ever had one of these? I'm in a lot of pain (abdominal) and have bouts of constipation. Any help is appreciated...thanks    — Angela L. (posted on February 26, 2003)

I can't help you diagnose your problem, but I can speak to the pancreatitis. Last year I had an operation and developed pancreatitis as a side effect which I was aware could happen. Believe me, if you had pancreatitis you would know it. There is a blood test they do to check a certain level in your blood. If it is elevated then that is a sure sign you have it. I can't remember what the test is, but regular levels are between 25-50 or something like that. Mine was 250. Severe cases go as high as 6 or 700. But I was throwing up and had a fever of 101. I was only having abdominal pain because of the constant vomiting. Pancreatitis gets worse FAST. If you have it, I think you would be in the hospital by now. Good luck with your recent developments and God Bless.

Last September my symptoms were lots of upper abdominal pain especially after eating or drinking and one very intense episode of abdominal cramping and vomiting. I went to two doctors (who both sent me home) before I ended up going to the ER where they admitted me with pancreatitis. I was in the hospital for 5 days. They said that my high triglyceride levels (lipid levels) along with my out of control high glucose levels had caused the pancreatitis. The only thing to help was nothing by mouth (not even water) to let the pancreas heal and rest, lowering my lipids and controlling my blood sugar. I was told that this is a very dangerous condition... please follow up... go to the Emergency Room if you can't get help from the doctors.

I myself had an internal hernia, at 100 lbs down, I was in a lot of severe pain about 20 minutes after eating with severe cramping, had x-rays and c-t scans they showed nothing, I have an awesome surgeon who said she thought it was internal hernias, went in for surgery the next day and I did have 4 internal hernias and twisted intestines, see your bariatric surgeon if you havnt already, sometimes reagular doctors dont know what they are dealing with helpiong post op patients. harmonie
