Question:
Is loss of hair common also with Gastic Band surgery?
I hear alot about post ops losing hair around month 3. I've had the Vertical Gastric Band procedure and I want to know if anyone else with the same surgery has lost hair. — debrapowell (posted on February 22, 2003)

I had the adjustable gastric band Sept.30th 2002 and as of yet I have not
had a problem with hair loss. Talk to your hair stylist and they can
recommed some products that will help. Are you taking a multi-vitamin? I
chew flitstones and they are enough for me.

I had VBG on 10/1/02 and my hair loss started about 2 months ago, it's
slowed a bit but still coming out. Hope this helps :)

Hairloss is common with ANY procedure that uses anesthesia. I had a ton of
loss when I had my son, from the epidural. Some people are more sensitive
and react to the anesthesia more than others, and consequently will have
more loss. Don't waste your money on "hair" products, as this
will pass on its own. I agree with finding a flattering style while you
wait......you may be one of the ones who is not effected at all! Good
luck!

This is just my personal opinion, but I think in most cases hair loss is
NOT due to anestesia.. I have had 6 surgeries prior to having the weight
loss surgery and never lost a bit of hair.. Had weight loss surgery about 4
months agao and have recently noticed some hai loss.Everyone seems to have
different opinions why this happens. Some say it's anestesia, others say
lack of protein & others say it's horemones going wild.. My guess is
horemones.. because my nails are growing fantastic for the first time in my
life and usually if there is a lack of protein in your body nails would not
grow well.. So since in my particular case I have now ruled out lack of
protein as well as anestesia that leaves only hormones..

This subject is quite interesting, and it goes to show that we all are so
very different. Unlike the prev. poster, I have had hair loss with all 6
of my surgeries. So I automatically assumed it was the anesthesia. Maybe
its the hormones out of whack each and every time? Who knows, I just know
that I am *way* susceptible to hair loss with any trauma to the body, or
emotions for that matter. I went through the hair loss twice since
surgery. I am so thankful that it grows back in or I would be BALD!!
Sorry I couldn't answer your question more specifically on VGB.
