Question:
Has anyone had sucess from the surgery who has PCOS or Syndrome X?
I am looking for comments from anyone who has been diagnosed with condition PCOS or as it's now refered to as Syndrome X. I want to know how sucessfull the surgery has been at allowing them not only to lose weight but to keep the condition in check. Also anything else they may have arrisen that may have aggrivated the condition after the surgery. Thank you, — Brenda L. (posted on January 28, 2003)

Brenda,
I have PCOS, I was diagnosed finally about 4 years ago and was so damn
sick. I was over 300lbs, no periods, no ovulation, growing hair where I
shouldn't and loosing it where I should, the cysts, etc... You name it I
had it. Every single symptom if you can believe it. Now here I am almost
11 months out and down to 135lbs :) and I started at 320!! I now have a
period every month, and for the first time in my life I have to use a form
of BC to make sure I do not get preggers!! Can you believe it. I am not on
BCP's so I know that is not keeping me regular, my body is :) The hair on
my arms..thinner!! The hair on my legs...thinner!! The hair on my
head...THICKER!! I am very happy with the results and recommend it to
anyone that has been diagnosed with PCOS! I post updates at
www.soulcysters.com and www.obgyn.net (the PCOS message board). ***10 mths
PO, -185lbs, weight 135!!)

Syndrome X is not the same as PCOS. My father has been diagnosed with
Syndrome X and if he has ovaries, then that's a medical miracle. I believe
Syndrome X refers to the genetic pattern associated with obesity, diabetes,
high blood pressure, etc....

Yes, I have had sucess. Please read my site- I keep it updated on my
conditions and how WLS has affected them, and what's NOT been affected.
Please don't let anyone tell you that WLS cures PCOS, as it does not. Like
Diabetes, it THERE IS NO CURE- although it does help your conditions
greatly. I cleared up some conditions, saw no improvements on others and
had some new ones arise. I also am a member of soulcysters.net and I also
highly reccomend this site: http://www.inciid.org/faq/pcos.html which does
briefly mention Syndrome X.

I had PCOS pre-op. Not being able to get pregnant was probably my main
reason for wanting the RNY surgery. I got my period in the hospital after
my surgery and then every 30 days for the first 3 months. That really
surprised me as I honestly thought I'd have to lose 100 or more pounds
before I saw a difference. I hadn't had a regular period since I was a
teenager. I wound up actually accidentally getting pregnant during my 5th
month post-op. Who knew I'd be so fertile so fast!?!?!

hi there :) i too was diagnosed with pcos pre op. i always had regular
cycles but by the age 22, i started missing periods and my weight began to
sky rocket, this is when i was well on my way to mo. i never really knew
pcos existed nor that there was a link to pcos and obesity. i wanted to
have a baby but with no cycles, i wasnt ovulating. my doctor put me on a 14
day supply of progesterone which brouhgt on my cycle, by the next month i
had conceived my now 9 year old son.through ive literally gone a whole year
before with no period what so ever.they came and went as they pleased.i was
diagnosed with pcos in 1996 and still have it.after wls my periods are very
regular but i honestly dont know if im ovulating or not, ive not tried to
become pregnant so i dont know if im more fertile now or not. while wls has
helped to aleviate some of the symptoms of my pcos it has not cured it.also
during rapid weight loss you are most likely ganna expereince cycle
irregularites at first until things settle down and the hormones are back
in check. i wish you the best of luck! :)
