Question:
Are blood clots common...and when are you safely out of the woods?
I noticed several people developed blood clots after several days even weeks after surgery? Are blood clots common...and when are you safely out of the woods? I read where someone developed one 3 or 4 weeks after surgery and died.... — Deborah L. (posted on January 9, 2003)

I,too, have heard that blood clots can develop weeks after surgery. The
way to avoid blood clots is to do alot of walking. Thats why they get you
out of bed hours after surgery and tell you to walk, walk, walk. And when
you go home you should continue doing lots of walking to avoid clots.

Hi. I was very worried about clots pre-op, too. I read that with any
surgery clots can appear up to 6 months after your surgery. However, this
is very unlikely. The highest risk days are the first few after surgery.
Each passing day after that, the risk of a clot lessens. Keep active; keep
walking. The risk of a clot from WLS is not higher than the risk for other
surgeries. Good luck!
