Question:
Why is it that.....
we absorb the protein in our protein drinks but not in milk, as I have heard some people say on here. It doesn't make sense to me. Thanks! — TP (posted on December 6, 2002)

Perhaps at the library you can find a physiology book that shows the
process of digestion. Foods & beverages that pass into the whole
stomach are subject to enzymes & acids, where they are
"digested", to mean broken down into an absorbable form, ready to
be absorbed. Digestion & absorption are not the same thing. After RNY,
the foods no longer pass thru that enzyme/acid bath, so normal digestion
does not occur. Whey protein is predigested (chemically) so it is ready to
be absorbed by the remaining intestine, without the need to be digested in
the usual manner. Food proteins & milk are at a disadvantage, simply
because they are pass thing thru the intestine without having been
"digested" as thoroughly. For proximals, they travel together in
the intestine for awhile, but the digestion process is not the same.

My doctor says this is not true. He recommends drinking 2 glasses of milk
a day for protein.

My surgeon does not allow milk on the post-op diet, not ever. That just
goes to show the difference in Doctors.

Michelle I remember my pre op visit to the nutronist. She had a argument
with the previous patient. All about you and Milk. Called you by name. Was
really unhappy. What the MDs want really varies all over the lot.... They
cant ALL be right. Of course they all PRACTICE medicine:)

My surgeon and nutritionist are on the pro-milk side. From our
diet:<br>
<b>Milk, Yogurt & Cheese Group</b>
<li>Low-fat dairy products such as low-fat yogurt, part skim cheese,
and cottage cheese.
<li>Drink skim, 1% milk or lactose free alternative.<br>
These foods are a good source of protein and calcium.

Hey. I too was told by my nutritionist to drink atleast 3 cups daily of
skim, 1% or 2% but not whole milk daily. She said we could also add 2
tblspoons dry milk powder to the skim to get more protein out of the drink.

Just an FWIW...it's my understanding that doctors are only required to take
1 nutrition course in med school. Also, nutritionists and dieticians have
been stuck on the food pyramid from the time it was invented. It's only
been within the past few months that the FDA and other powers-that-be have
stated it should really be upside down! Also, why do you think Americans
got so fat in the first place? So, sure, go ahead and accept what the
doctors & nutritionists tell you as gospel. Then, 5 years down the
road, when your labs are in the toliet, maybe you'll check out the
long-termers and consider trying what's worked for them. :))

As we know, in the animal kingdom, animals normally eat what is appropriate
for their bodies. Animals usually don't become over weight. We are the only
living mammal that seeks to drink milk after we are weaned. Do we *really*
need this form of protien after weaning, especially since there is a high
number of allergies to milk? Isn't it even made worse by the fact that we
are drinking the milk of not our own species but that of other species? I
find this interesting, though personally, I love milk and drink it often.
Just a bit of "Milk for Thought".

Bob, that's funny! My doc had to beat me with a stick to get ME to accept
that milk would fatten me up again. I just could not believe such a
"healthy" thing could be "bad". LOL! But once a doc
handed me a physiology book and I saw how digestion works, it was all
obvious. I'm just not willing to take chances with my wt loss OR my lab
values, so you'll note I usually send people to a nice B&W hard core
source. A book.
