Question:
5 weeks post-op and starving.
I have lost only 25 lbs, and have followed my menu to the T. Protein, water, etc. I can also eat alot more then what I expected. Anyone else have this happen to them? — DANA H. (posted on October 16, 2002)

Hi. You sound alot like me. I am 4.5mos out from rny. I have lost 64lbs.
I have been hungry since the first week and now I can eat 6 ounces at a
meal. The good news is that I can tolerate all meat and vegetables. My
hair is not falling out, and the weight is coming off. It sounds like you
are doing fine. twenty-five pounds in 5 weeks is awesome! Just remember to
follow your surgeons eating plan and you will keep losing.

Dana, stop saying "only lost" 25 pounds. What is
"only" about 25 pounds? Think you could have done that on weight
watchers? As long as you are sticking to your menu, eating protein first,
lots of water, vitamins, you are fine. Depends on the consistency of the
food as to how much you can eat-watery, non-dense items you can eat more
of...bet ya can't eat 6 oz of baked chicken or pasta! Your fine.

You are doing wonderfully! That's 5 lbs a week, my goodness. Like you I
was hungry in fact starving my first week, then that went away. I get
hungry now but not starving and could always eat more than the doctor's
book said. The weight is still coming off 4 or 5 lbs a week and I'm now at
week 6 post op and have lost 34 lbs. Hang in there. The weight doesn't
come off overnight but when you look back a year from now it will seem that
way.

When di dyou start your protein (what kind) & vites? Are you drinking
milk? Using yogurt, applesauce, stuff like that? All the hidden sugars in
those can make you OH SO HUNGRY and can put a dent in your wt loss. How
big are your meals? You might be doing just fine, but maybe there is one
little glitch in your system. Who knows? Sometimes it just takes another
eyeball to see it

Dana BTC told me that I am lucky that I feel hungry because it reminds you
to eat. I don't feel to lucky sometimes because hungry hurts and I feel
all lightheaded and crazy so I make sure that I am eating about every 3
hours so I don't feel that way.
About the amount that you eat. There was this wise lady on the posts that
said that your stomach is kind of asleep after this surgery and may not be
able to signal to you that you have had enough so you need to know about
how much to eat and let that be it. but do that frequently so you know
that you are getting enough daily but that you don't over eat because you
have gone to long and that awful hungry feeling comes.
Good Luck

Im am so glad to hear other people feel this way. I was hungry the week I
came home from the hosp. and I had cravings too. I feel I can eat more than
alot of post ops I hear some people say they eat a few mouthfuls and there
full. There are days when I hardly eat at all and then some days Im hungry
all the time. I am 2 months post op and lost 55lbs and I am still steadly 5
to 7lbs a week so I guess Im doing something right.I think everybodys
different and we cant compare ourselves to one another. Good luck
