Question:
How long should a person.....
remain in ketosis? I am a tad over 5 weeks out and drink tons of water but am in the highest ketosis. I don't want to damage my kidneys or liver. — TP (posted on September 13, 2002)

I am almost 8 weeks out, and I am still in ketosis too. I do eat
carbs...but I guess not enough to stop the ketones. On the color scale,
mine has been on the darkest color for weeks. I do eat a lot of protein,
and less carbs, the way we are supposed to, so I am not going to worry. My
doctor also does not seem too concerned.

I didn't know staying in ketosis was potentially harmful. I was in ketosis
big time for about the last four months, now I am in minimum ketosis. I
might have to research this.

There are side affects of ketosis which can be dangerous- including high
triglycerides. I had used the Atkins diet on and off for years, and did a
lot of damamge, then I had pancreatitis 2 years ago. It is a long story, so
if you are interested, please read my profile.
Good luck to you.

How do you know how high of Ketosis you are?

Margaret, you can buy Ketostix to measure your ketones level at a pharmacy.
My pharmacy, Longs Drugs, keeps their supply behind the prescription
counter. I had to ask them where they were. They're not too expensive and
they're interesting to watch change colors. I was in high ketosis until I
hit my fourth month and started adding foods. I'm now at the minimum
level. Little bit of a bummer.
