Question:
Which surgery is better the Fobi Pouch or Lap RNY?
A surgeon who performs the foboi pouch states that longterm weight loss is better with this procedure. I'm confused. What does the longterm (>5 yrs) data say? Which procedure is best for long term weight loss because this operation is something no one should want to go through twice. — Mary H. (posted on June 4, 2002)

it is all a matter of opinion and who you are talking to.....everyone
thinks their sx is the best, that is why they chose it (i.e. - I personally
believe the Open RNY is the best) ..........my opinion shouldn't make your
decision...do your research and make a decision that is best for you

The "fobi" and the RNY are basically the 'same' the difference is
the 'ring' the fobi uses. I personally had an open RNY, and the the
opening from the pouch to the intestestines is to large (so no food
restriction intake) this was NOT disucessed prior to surgery as being a
problem; tho surgeons have know about it for a long time. The majority of
them leave you on your own if you get this 'problem' if you have the fobi -
you will NOT have this problem. I for one in hin sight would pick the fobi
over the RNY just for this reason. Its terrible to have.

I'm pre-op, but I have decided on Fobi procedure will be better for my long
term care and maintenance for long term weight loss. I can't speak for Lap
RNY, as I have not researched it as extensively. A great website for
explanation of the Fobi procedure is www.cstobesity.com, you can see a
diagram of the procedure and there is a question and answer section. You
will ultimately decide on what you think is best for you, best wishes and
God's blessings. Jo-Dee

The National Institute of Health (NIH) identifies the RNY as the Gold
Standard for long term success. Visit their web site and maybe that will
assist you in determining what is right for you. Best wishes.

The second poster is correct--the fobi pouch and the RNY are basically the
same procedure. The only differences are the silastic ring at the opening
of the pouch into the intestines and (usually) a smaller pouch to begin
with. I had the fobi procedure done a month ago, and I was so glad that I
had the opportunity to have it done here in Tulsa, OK. My surgeon said
that with the silastic ring, the opening to the intestines will never
stretch. Also, I currently have a 1 oz. pouch--he said that it will
stretch to about 4 oz. With the RNY, most doctors start with a larger
pouch, and the pouch usually stretches to 8-12 oz. My surgeon said that
his patients lose on average 80%-85% of their excess weight (as opposed to
65% for RNY) and that his patients have an easier time keeping it off than
the average RNY patient. Hope this information helps!
