Question:
has any one tried buffalo meat?
I have been doing a search of buffalo meat instead of beef. Has any one tried it and what do you think of it? Thank you for any information. Tina — Tina L. (posted on May 7, 2002)

Yes, I have eaten buffalo meat. It does taste pretty much like beef, but
it is way lower in fat, so it can be pretty dry. The trick is to not
overcook it.

We are from SD and we eat buffalo quite often. We think it's really good!
It's a lot leaner than beef. Around here they are raised like cattle so
they really don't taste "gamey". VERY GOOD EATING :-) If you have
anymore questions please feel free to e-mail us.

I love it and eat it fairly often, but I actually prefer beefalo, which is
a buffalo/beef hybrid. It's easier to find here in the Seattle area because
our Larry's Markets always carry it. I like the lower fat and lower
cholesterol aspects of it, and I think it tastes fantastic. I do like meat
cooked medium rare; I think if you like steak well-done, you might not like
beefalo or buffalo because it could get dry cooked that much.
Nutritionally, beefalo and buffalo are both superior to beef, and they both
tend to be raised without antibiotics and other undesirable contaminants as
well, also preferable. It's $2 or $3 a pound more expensive, but when
you're buying half a pound or less at a time, who cares? :-)

Very, very tasty...those Indians were really on to something. I prefer it
over ground beef of any grade.

I have tried buffalo meat and I like it very much. I live in Mass. and have
trouble finding it in the store. I have made shepards pie with fat free
gravy, and meatballs in tomato sauce, also someone gave me barbecued ribs
(boy! were they big). It is a very good source of protein with little fat
or cholesterol. I believe you can basically cook it the same way you do
beef, I just haven't tried it other ways than I listed. I even brought the
meatballs over to some relatives and didn't tell them until a week later.
They really enjoyed them.

I agree with gar... it can be dry if overcooked, but it is still good.

I have eaten buffalo meat most all of my life. It is very good. I am 66%
Cherokee and lived in Okla for many years and it was a staple in our diet.
Since moving to St.L, I have had to rely on my indian brother and sisters
to bring some with them when they are in the area for a pow wow or
visiting. If anyone knows of a website where I could order it, I would
love to hear from you. By the way, Since it is so low in fat, it can get
dry like gar said. Food keeps cooking for a couple minutes after it is
removed from the stove and a couple min can make all the dif with low fat
meat like buffalo!

I work at a University Cafeteria and we had like 3000 lbs of buffalo meat
last winter, so it was served every day so we could have hamburgers and
they made chili with it, I tryed it twice, I cooked the hamburger myself
because if it is over cooked it is very very dry. It is very tasty but man
oh man did it do a number on my new tummy, severe diareha and gas like
crazy, thats why I tryed it twice to make sure and same thing the second
time. They had cards with e-mail address to order it. If you go to a search
engine you can probably find it.I can't remember the address. Karen

I've ate it a few times but it has always been very dry. And I don't
remember any fat in it, so it is'nt as tasty. I would like to try the
Beefalo someone mentioned. ;)
Buffalo jerky is good too.

It is very lean and tasty. Steaks are best marinated in a home-made
marinade and grilled. Do not over cook though, it must be eaten pink.If it
is over cooked it will be too dry. A 1 inch thick steak, on the average,
should be grilled for 7-8 minutes on each side. Makes my mouth water just
thinking about it. Yummy! Also a good source of iron!!!
