Question:
Help! Gaining a pound a day! What can I do?
I am 8 months post-op open RNY and have lost 105 pounds. I'm one of those people who weigh every day. I do this because I feel it helps me to stay on track and is usually positive reinforcement. For the last 5 days I have gained a pound a day. I don't think I've done anything different. I didn't think I was getting enough protein so I started supplements again. I drink 50-60 oz of water a day. I'm not eating more so I don't think my staples have ruptured. I'm not PMS it's the middle of my cycle. I did hurt my knee 6 weeks ago so I can't do much exercise right now - am having an MRI today. Any advise or suggestions? This really scares me!!! — georgiacarol (posted on May 10, 2001)

Are you weighing at different times of the day? ALWAYS weigh just
immediately upon rising in the morning and never later in the day. I can
weigh 5 pounds more at night than in the morning every day! Also, you
really shouldn't weigh daily, but try for weekly. If the trend continues,
call your surgeon's office and get them to check you. Best wishes.

On any given day your water, muscle and fat levels will fluctuate. That is
why they always say not to weigh every day. One day you will wake up and be
2 lbs. heavier. The next day 4 lbs. lighter. (Which if anyone who has PMS
knows, that IS entirely possible). Are you taking any meds for your knee,
like steroids? Steroids will make you gain weight. Also, since your
activity level is less, your body may be compensating. You might also
consider that upping your protein intake could affect your weight as well.
It is all a big mystery. What is important is to take it one week at a time
for tallying up weight loss. I have read people who are as many months
post-op as you and even less who say that they hit a plateau for weeks.
That may be it.
If you continue to gain, I would talk with your doctor. He is the one that
would be able to answer your questions.
