Question:
Is A Doctor Needed To Start A Support Group?
I am two hours away from my surgeon but feel the need to get together with others who have had surgery or who are considering it. What is needed to start a support group? Knowing we can only share are experiences and not give medical advice can those of us in ths area get together or would it be unwise without a medical professional directing the meeting? The support I receive from this site is the best but feel the need to meet one on one with others who understand the before and after of this surgery. — Rebecca D. (posted on August 28, 2000)

Hi Rebecca, Although I attend an organized support group at
the hospital where I had surgery, I also started e-mailing
people who lived near me who where going to have surgery. We
would get together and go out. Each time we would meet
(about every 3 or 4 weeks) there would always be someone
new to our little group. In the begining, there was just 3
of us...now there is about 13. We have an absolute blast
together and feel like we have known each other for a life-
time. They tease me and call me the "Events Coordinator"!
They are a great group of people, several who are now post
op including myself. The support is just great and for the
most part we all have the same Dr. with the exception of
1 or 2. I hope you can get something started in your area. I
am so proud to be friends with these people and really
cherish my new found buddies! Good luck to you!

Hi There,
The only requirement as far as I know is a desire to help and
support others. Good luck. Linda
