Question:
Hernia Pain. Has anyone used a abdominal binder?
I am 8 weeks post op and have developed a hernia at the top of my scar. It is very painful to stand up, laugh, cough or sneeze. I seen my surgeon today and he wants me to wait as long as I can to have surgery to repair this until I lose as much weight as possible. He advised me to get a abdonimal binder to try and ease some of the pain. He also gave me two shots in the muscle to numb it for awhile. Has anyone ever used a binder to help the pain? as possible. — Rebecca D. (posted on August 23, 2000)

I am sorry to hear about your hernia. I was required by my Dr to wear a
binder for 6 weeks after surgery (OPEN RNY 6/23/00). The binder was
labeled a "rib belt" and was a strong ace bandage type elastic
material with velcro on one end. It was not at all uncomfortable and I
actually liked having it, like a security blanket over my incision site. I
am sure it helped the pain when I had to cough or sneeze right after
surgery. I hope you are feeling better soon.
Good luck and I hope this helps!

Get one! I had a hernia repair with my WLS and my surgeon wanted us to wear
one. It was a great support for keeping pressure off the wound area and it
helped with back support. Once the wound got better the area where he
repaired the hernia was still a bit sore and the binder gave me alot of
relief. The hospital has them and usually will charge it to the insurance
company for you. You wont regret it.
