Question:
How can the insurance denie gastric bypass when it it medicaly necessary?
All of my doctors have told me that if I do not have this surgery that I will die. I keep getting more and more things wrong with me every month. How can they play God with you life like this. We pay big bucks for medical insurance and then are denied for a life saving surgery. God bless all of us! — Martha D. (posted on June 15, 2000)

My advice would be to contact Walter Lindstrom, an attorney in San Diego CA
at www.obesitylaw.com He helped me get approved. At least you could talk
with him and see what he might had to say. Good luck!!!

I hate to tell you this, but insurance companies are not required to cover
each and everything that is medically possible to be done to us. They all
have their own exclusions. This does not mean that you cannot have medical
treatment that you need - it just means that your insurance company may
not pay for it. It is great that so many do pay for this surgery - but
many still do not. Some don't cover the cost of pregnancy and childbirth.
Some don't cover the cost of heart or liver transplants. That is why
people have big fund raisers for sick people sometimes. I know it is awful
to think about paying for this yourself, but many on this site have done
just that. Think creatively and maybe you'll discover a solution. Do you
own something of value which you could sell? Maybe some land? How much
equity do you have in your home? Lots of people have equity just sitting
there doing nothing - borrow against it. I wish you the best - but for
your own sake, don't just sit there boo hooing - go to work in search for a
way to raise the money. The surgery will be worth every dime you have to
pay!
