Question:
has anyone ever been refused insurance due to their weight
I was denied insurance because of my weight they told me that I was a high risk and referred me to the california major risk medical insurance program MRMIP it's going to cost me 333.00 dollars a month and I chose Blue Shield PPO they have a 90 day pre-exsisting condition exclusion then after the 90 days they say that they will pay for pre-exsisting conditions does anyone know if weight loss surgery will be paid for. — L. I have been denied insurance several times for being overweight, and am
paying for the surgery myself because I have no insurance.

I too, was denied insurance from BCBS of Illinois due to my current
"build" (note: not because of my medical history) just last
month. I am self-employed and have to pay for my own health insurance. I
was quite shocked and outraged because I see it as a very blatant form of
obesity discrimination. I contacted an obesity attorney and he basically
said they had the right to set up underwriting limits in regards to
weight.
However, since I have never been denied insurance before when I was
employed by a larger company, I also see it as discrimination against
self-employed people.
I have contacted them regarding their appeal process and have just received
copies of my medical records to include with my appeal letter. We'll see
how it goes.

I too attempted to get my own insurance but was denied by Kaiser due to my
excessive weight. I was told that I'd have to get CA major risk medical
insurance program insurance. Well, I couldn't afford it. I currently have
Medi-Cal and have no idea about how I could find a surgeon and qualify for
surgery. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
