I will be going on vacation when i am 3 months post op. I had the Rny surgery. Can I have wine before dinner. How would alcohol affect my body? — Candy I. (posted on December 30, 1999)

Hi! After 6 weeks my surgeon said I could have an occasion glass of
wine...he actually said that a glass of wine is good for you! I had the
open RNY on 10/19/99 and I have had wine since surgery.

I had my first post-op visit with my surgeon yesterday, and at 3 1/2 weeks
out, my biggest question was, "when can I have a glass of wine?"
I really wanted a glass of wine! And do you know what he said? He said,
"well then, you should have one!" He emphasized going slowly
because of how my newly remodled insides might handle alcohol, but other
than that, he saw no problem with an occassional drink. Actually, he kept
repeating, "you are not on a diet anymore ... dieting is the enemy ...
you are now NORMAL."
Well, I am currently in the middle of a glass of my favorite red wine, and
I am drinking it slowly (as I did before surgery). I don't want to offend
anyone who doesn't drink, but I love wine -- and only certain wines, at
that. After feeling sick, like a patient, this really does help me feel
like my life is becoming normal again as a post-op.
