Question:
I don't have a thyroid and wonder if anyone else has had the surgery after
having their thyroid out, and what complications this might cause. — Beth N. (posted on April 21, 1999)

I just posted this answer in the space just above your question. I had my
entire thyroid removed two years ago in a large mass in my throat. The
parathyroids were also removed. Now, I can no longer absorb calcium. I
have been told by my doctors that having a distal gastric bypass with a
bileopancreatic diversion (what I was hoping for) would make my
malabsorption problem much worse and therefore very dangerous for me. If
you still have your parathyroids, however, it should not present that same
problems for you.

I had my thyroid removed about 20 years ago - due to Thyroid cancer. I
still have a small piece of it left - but not much and take sythroid every
day. Just went for my 6 month check - post surgery...and they did blood
tests, and I haven't heard anything back yet, It has been at least three
weeks and the doctor hasn't called with any odd findings. I feel good -
although sometimes tired. Am losing slower than some others I know - have
lost about 80-85 pounds. See my endocrinologist at the end of this week.
Am anxious to see what she says about my T3, T4 and TSH levels. Will
update you if anything is out of the ordinary.
