Question:
Pregnancy following gastric bypass - Any Special needs?
I am in the process of getting pregnant. I am wondering if anyone has had a baby and if there is anything you wish you would have known before you got pregnant. Special vitamins or supplements? I am over 3 years out. My weight is stable and I am very happy with the results. Also did you gain weight after the baby and were you able to lose the baby weight? Any information would be greatly appreciated! :) — Ali D. (posted on August 1, 2005)

I am currently very pregnant (39 weeks, 1 week to go) after I had Open RNY
on June 26, 2002. All I have been taking is a prenatal vitamin (not
prescribed) as recommended by my doctor. You should start on the pre-natal
vitamins before you actually become pregnant due to the folic acid that is
in them. (make sure they have folic acid) There is no need to get an
expensive pre-natal either. I bought the cheapest one over the counter,
and checked the contents to the most expensive, and they are virtually the
same. I also opted to take extra calcium (I love the chewable kind that
taste like chocolate (like Viactive, but the generic brand)My doctors only
concern was that I should be gaining weight by the 20th week of pregnancy,
otherwise she would have sent me to a nutritionist. I have gained around
25 pounds which is in the ballpark for a regular (non gastric
bypass)pregnancy.
I will have to let you know about losing the baby weight, but I plan on
breastfeeding exclusively, which is not only good for baby, but for me
burns an extra 500 calories per day, and will even help with the
pre-pregnancy fat deposits.
I wish you all the best. Have fun in the process ;) Keep an Eye out for my
updates on my profile here. I still don't know what I'm having, as we
chose to be suprised, but I will let everyone know all the vital stats as
soon as I can.

I got pregnant 10 months post op. It was a wonderful pregnancy! I was
finally a "cute" pregnant person. I gained 30lbs with my
pregnancy. My docs were very pleased with that amount of weight gain. I
lost all but 10 pounds when I had the baby. I took my regular vits and
added a prenatal. Nothing else special was needed. Godd luck!
