Question:
How long after LAP RNY do you think I can join a health club?
I am going to ask my doctor but cannot get in touch with him. I really feel like I need to get out of this house! — Lizette A. (posted on November 4, 2003)

My Dr said to get walking and excersizing at 2 weeks. So, I started on a
treadmill. Joining a health club is great, what you need to find out is
what excersize you can do and when.

At 2wks my Surgeon released me to join the gym. He said that is a perk of
having Lap Surgery. I've had no problems.

If you are ready for the gym, go for it. My surgeon and nutritionist
really promote exercise. They wanted us walking 30 minutes a day in the
hospital. I waited until 2 months for the gym, but only because I had had
some complications and felt tired a lot. I have a friend who was back at
the gym at less than 1 week post-op. We are both LAP RNY of course. If
you had open, you may want to give yourself more time to heal.

Do check with your doc first, because, as you can tell, the advice on this
one varies greatly. I had lap RNY, and my surgeon didn't want me to do any
strenuous exercises until three months out so as not to risk a hernia. I
was encouraged to walk a lot, but nothing to stress the abdominal muscles.
I don't have any hernias, but whether I would have had I started gym
exercise sooner no one will ever know.

I started at the gym at 5 weeks post op after my Dr. gave the go ahead. Ab
work was a little uncomfortable so I eased my way into that.
