Question:
Anyone out there 5'3

Does this look and feel right for you? The charts say I should be 140 but 150 sounds pretty good to me. I am taking into consideration the heavier bones I have from being MO my whole life. I am at 173 now down from 266.    — Kim N. (posted on August 11, 2003)

Hi there..I agree with you. I am 5'3 and started out at 268 lbs. I currently weigh 189 and want to get down to 150. I think anything under that would make me look sickly. I am sticking to the 150 goal and nothing under!! I don't care what the charts say...lol. Take care and congrats on your weight loss...you are doing GREAT!!!

Hi Kim, I am 5'3 and went from 249 to 148 and am now a size 10 and happy to be here. It depends on what size you want to end up. 140 would put me closer to a size 8. The way I look at it, the smaller the weight and size, the less amount of calories per day to maintain. I like to eat, so I can have more calories per day to maintain a size 10 then a size 8. Why don't you wait to see what you look like when you lose more and decide from there.

I'm 5'2 and I started out at 240, I'm now down to 129/130, and wearing a size 2/4. I have a small frame, which was hidden all these years :) My husband thinks I looked better when I was 145. He says that my chest, ribs, hip and back bones stick out now. I don't see it, but I think your body just gets to a certain weight, and kind of stops. That's what mine has done, I lose 3 or 4 pounds, then put them back on. I guess my "range" is 130.

I am also 5ft 3inches. My starting weight was 251 and I am now 188 .. I want to be in the 130s only because that puts me at my ideal weight.. I dont care if its 130 or 139 as long as its in the 130s LOL

Hi, I'm 5'4" and weigh 175, down from 232. I am a comfortable size 10. I'm pretty tone too. (Thanks to working with a trainer for almost a year BEFORE WLS). I thought I wanted to weigh 120 (my weight in younger days) but that was before I realized how much my body composition has changed. If I lost another 55 lbs I would be bone-thin, and, for me, I don't think that would look good at all. I figure, another 20 lbs and I'll be a good size 6. Thats good enough for me.

I'm 5'3" also and small framed. I weigh 120-123 and wear a size 4 petite. My original goal was 110, but now I realize that I would be too thin at that weight. I think I look (and actually am) smaller than I did when I was younger at this same weight. I think if you are happy with the way you feel, and the way you look, then you are the right size!! I don't care what the charts say. I know when I'm where I need to be by the way I feel. Good Luck!!

What chart are you referring to? BMI chart? Met Insurance chart? I'm 39 yo, 5'31/2" tall, starting weight 276 and now almost 11 months post op weighed 166 this morning. While I have struggled with my trainer, nutritionist, and many weight charts over the perfect "goal weight" for someone with my specs, I think it all comes down to 1. how well you feel at a certain weight 2. if you can maintain it during a lifetime 3. in what size clothing you are comfortable. To a certain extent, I have reconciled the fact that after losing 110 lbs, I am tremendously more healthy (and stronger) than I was this time last year. What I have found with respect to scales and numbers is that it can drive you batty, if you succumb to the "ideal" weight theory. I harken back to the "standardized" weight theory for women which goes something like "for a 5 foot tall woman, the ideal weight is 100 lbs. (yea, right). For every inch above that, add 5 lbs." Don't know what that is based upon, but my bones probably weigh close to 100 lbs. With respect to weight and size, one of the things I latched upon early in my program was weight training (combined with cardio exercise). The principal that building muscle burns fat (which means you will have less sagging skin and a more toned appearance); muscle is more dense than fat (which means that it takes up less space in your body and that you may weigh more but actually wear smaller size clothes); muscle builds lean body mass and stronger bones (which will protect us from osteoporosis in the future). While I've engaged in supervised weight training beginning at 8 weeks out, I have struggled with the fact that the scale hasn't flown down the numbers. My trainer repeatedly points out to me that in the long run, weight training is one of the best investments I can make for overall health. According to the Obesityhelp BMI chart, someone our height should weigh between 105-140 to be considered a "normal weight." Bottom line, I think we have to work the program and monitor at what weight we can live with. A few pounds one way or another isn't going to make much difference (except to us). All the best.

Hi..I'm barely 5'4", started at 316. Now at 2 years post op, I weigh 158, and wear size 10 pants. I was down 148, and wearing 8 comfortably, and am working to get back there. I had a Breast reduction and put on weight while on medical leave..yuck! Good luck!

I always encourage people to aim for a goal size instead of a goal weight. Like the previous poster said, this is because our body composition has changed so much. I'm the same size I was in high school but weigh 40 POUNDS MORE!! How weird is that? I'm 5'2" and a solid size 10 with an occasional 8 or 12 thrown in for good measure. Would I love to be a size 6? Oh yeahhhh but my body seems to be content where it is and I've given up on battling for those last 10 or 15 pounds. Heck - I'm 42 years old and my body has never seen a size 6 before so why should it start now? ha ha As far as being at goal goes, if you set a flexible, reasonable goal - you'll know when you get there! Keep up the GREAT work.

I think that the answer is what ever you are comfortable with. My original goal at 5'7" was 147 and I am now 170 in a 10 or 12. I still want to hit 147 but have agreed to reevaluate it every 10 pounds from here on out with my nutritionist. Most people around me think that I am done but I just want to get my BMI under 25.

I'm 5'2 and started out at 248. I now weigh 125. You'll find that when you hit 150 you will want to go lower and you will. You'll also look better. At 155 I was a tight size 10. At 125, I'm a size 4.

I am 5'3" and started at 267. I am currently at 189 and would like to be at 140 when I am finished. When I graduated from high school I weighed about 120-130 and wore a size 8-10. I think I will probably wear that at 140 now.
