Question:
how do i stop it?????
Hi, I ended up in the emergency room in the hospital yesterday, because i hadn't had a bowel movement in 5 days. I was so packed up that the doctor had to help me out. The most pain I ever felt in mylife. I never want this to happen again any suggestion will be very welcome. AT a loss was never constipated until i had surgery post- op 7 weeks. Thanks — Teresa T. I take one Fiberchoice Sugarfree chewable fiber tablet a day. Without it I
would not go to the bathroom for a week. At almost 10 months postop I find
if I skip the fiber I am back to being constipated. I hope this helps.

Try Metamucil or Citracel on a regular basis. Sometimes it could be we
aren't drinking enough water, exercising, or eating our veggies. Although
protein comes first we still need to concentrate on getting in the greens
(spinach, collards, mustards, etc.).

My surgeon prescribes Miralax - it's not a laxative but it keeps you from
becoming constipated. It's a powder you mix with any liquid and has no
taste at all. It works great. Also, my doctor has me eat GrapeNuts soaked
in grape juice every morning. Grapenuts are high in fiber and the grape
juice (just enough to soften the cereal) is a natural laxative. I also eat
two prunes when I need to.

I understand how you must be feeling. I have always been on the
"constipated side" since childhood. One of my fears prior to
surgery was constipation. Eeek! It has been almost 5 weeks since my surgery
and right away I started sipping prune juice for breakfast. Sometimes
before bed, I take benefiber. To my amazement, I haven't been constipated
yet! Of course, you need to make sure you are getting your water in
throughout the day. My surgeon said that natural laxatives will not work
properly if you are not drinking enough liquid - might even make the
problem worse. (Cramp City!) Take Care!

Oh how I feel your pain. Twice now I have gotten so packed I was *sreaming*
for someone to take me to the ER. The pain was so bad it made WLS seem like
a walk in the park. And to add insult to injury, it happened even though I
have lots of fiber in my diet such as oatmeal, fresh fruits and veggies. I
have found that if I take 2-3 Colace pills a day I do go more often (every
other day). If I skip 1 day, I can take it to the bank I will stop up. Its
weird but I NEVER got constipated until after WLS. ~Sidney~ Open RNY

Drink tons of water- thats the most important ingrediant to keep those
bowels healthy. And I have a cup or two of popcorn most nights. Corn is a
natural laxative and works like a charm for me.

I swear by Benefiber. It mixes into liquids or soft foods completely--no
grit or funny taste. Four tabelspoons a day does the trick for me. My
dietitian also told me to eat sauteed onions once in a while, that they
will help keep you regular.

Be careful with Citricel. I used it and got even worse. I drink plenty of
fluids to counteract it but no luck. Add a little fat to your diet and ask
the Dr if you can lay off the iron supplemenmts foe awhile. It's a
miserable feeling. I was there.

I must agree with Vespa. I use 2 tablespoons of Benefiber mixed with 8
ounces of liquid everyday and it keeps me very regular. I did not want to
start taking laxatives because we can become dependent on them. The
Benefiber is great. It's tasteless and does not get clumpy at all. Please
try it.

Hi,
I have had this same problem and geezzz you're not kidding how HORRIBLE
that is, I've had the blockage thing before and would rather give birth
again!!!!! Anyways, you got alot of great answers but one thing that was
not on there that saved me was my surgeons office called in a prescription
Iron that is absorbed a little differently and it really works!! I've not
been blocked again since:) I must admit I was really kinda mad when I
found out about this from the nurse when I called her in such agony, I mean
why don't they just order this BEFORE???? why wait til this happens for
Gods sake!!! she said because its " kindof expensive" wellllllll
I was using the iron from walmart before that was around 20 dollars for a
large box and this one now is 5 dollars since its generic and I have a
prescription plan that covers it so that did not help curb my irateness at
all. Why not call your surgeon and ask them to call it in for you, its
called FOLTRIN which is generic for TRINSICON (brand) good luck!!!!!

Please don't wait that long to do something. Impaction are vary dangerous.
If you haven't gone in 2 days do somthing about it. The supplements
exspecially the iron will cause constipation, but these are important for
good healh. There are many good suggestion posted here. I work for a
chiropractor and he gives his patients a product called chiro-cleanse it
works fantastic it is a tea. Our patients love it. Hope this helps.
