Question:
What do you think of Glucerna made by Ensure as something to drink after surgery?
It is 24% protein and it has only 7 grams of sugar. "Made specifically for people who can benefit from a low carbohydrate/low fat nutritional drink?" — Eleanore Davis (posted on July 10, 2003)

I was in the hospital due to complications from my WLS and Glucerna was on
the menu. Give it a try.

DON"T EVEN GO THERE! Too much sugar!!! Way too much sugar! It will
slow your weight loss dramatically! I have recently discovered some
fantastic shakes and protein bars... I am going to post the info on my
profile within the next couple of days... these are the best things I have
ever tasted... I am 18 months post op. and down 227 lbs!!! Email me if you
want the info before I can get it on my profile! They have a website and
everything... I just can't remember the name of it off the top of my
head... I just put in a massive order for myself... these shakes and bars
beat anything... I can hardly believe it! LOL!

I never used it, but I was instructed to basically eat like a diabetic. As
I understand from living with my husband who is diabetic, your sugar grams
should remain under 8 grams per serving. I also know that some post ops
dump on less than that, so try it at home. Good luck!!

I have never tried it myself, but I have heard of postops dumping on
Glucerna. I think it has about 7 or 8 grams of sugar and my surgeon has
restricted us to only two or less. You know what I did see at CVS two days
ago, I saw a drink that was similar to Ensure. Its called Enterex
Diabetic. Its sweetened with Splenda instead of sugar so Im sure you
wouldnt have to worry about dumping. I have never tried it so I dont know
about the flavor. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

In the pre op mandatory diet classes I had to attend, the dietician
recommended Glucerna or Choice DM. Choice DM has a lot of added vitamins,
220 calories, 10 grams of fat, 24 grams of carbs (9 grams are sugar) and 9
grams of protein. (It was also available in my local grocery store.) Now,
it was recommended that we drink 4 oz of this mid-morning, during the
pureed phase of the diet plan, so just divide the above numbers in half. I
never dumped on Choice DM. It served a purpose early on, but I just don't
use it anymore. Too many calories and I prefer a protein shake instead,
and I am able to get all of my vitamin supplements down just fine. I think
Glucerna would be just fine to use after surgery. Don't stock up, though,
because your stomach may not care for it after surgery! Another one of
those things you will just have to try out.

Hi there. I tried Glucerna a couple of times but it was too sweet and
caused me to dump slightly plus the fact that it tastes nasty - I stopped
using it. I now drink Advantage protein drinks. They are low in carbs and
sugar - I believe they are part of the Atkins Diet menu. Walmart sells
them in the 6 pack. I love the taste. I've also bought some of the
protein drinks from Real Meals and they are ok - not as good as Advantage
but at least I can tolerate them. It's been 7 months and I am down 100
pounds...I must be doing something right. Good luck!! Debbie
