I am not sure we will ever be able to "gulp" again. I have heard some on here say tho, that they can drink normally. Just remember, those "gulps" are full of air that might make you very uncomfortable. At four months, I can drink almost normal but am resigned to the fact that I will never be able to gulp, chug, or swig a great big drink of water or anything else ever again.

Christina, How far post-op are you? For the first 6 weeks I had dry mouth so bad that I thought I would never quench my thirst; however, now at 9 weeks post-op that dry mouth has gone away and I am no longer "dying of thirst". While, I don't gulp (very painful) I do drink almost like a normal person. Good luck! DeniseL 9 wks>60lbs

Hi, I'm just over 3 months and can drink fairly normally, without taking major gulps. I can take 2 or 3 swallows, wait a minute or 2, then take a few more. I think I've been able to do this for about a month. No sodas though, non carbonated only. I belch enough already!!!!

I can relate to what you are saying... I just wanted to chug something. The sips drove me nuts too! I am 2 years post op and I can drink normally now... I can even chug, but only a gulp or two, or I get backed up...lol. ciao, Suze

I am 4 weeks post op and I can drink normally, just like I did before surgery. Although I have found that really cold water makes my tummy cramp some but other than that NO PROBLEMS.

It took between two to three months post-op for me to be able to drink "normally." It's frustrating in the beginning, trying to get liquids in, but unlike with food, your capacity to drink liquids will pretty much get back to normal (or, be a lot better than it is in the very beginning) before too long. Hang in there!

Hi. It depends on the person. I was drinking normally by 3 weeks-- I could finish 30 ounces in less than 45 minutes. Then I had stomach problems (probably a marginal ulcer)-- which made it impossible for me to drink fast. Now I'm healed and about 19 weeks out and I can gulp again. Good luck! Beth

I am two weeks post-op and I can't gulp without starting to feel sick very quickly. However, if I take my time, I have noticed that I can put away a bottle of water within an hour and I can eat an entire regular sized drinking cup of ice chips in one sitting. In short, if I keep a steady pace, I can consume normal amounts of fluid. I just can't do it by taking big, huge gulps.

At just over 3 months post op, I can down an 8 oz glass of water under 1 minute. Pre-op I could do it in 3-4 gulps. I can drink almost as fast as before just limited to amount. But it will depend on the person. <p>Take Care, Be Well, Be Happy!

You will never be able to really gulp something. If you do you will have extreme pain in your esophagus (at least I do). The BEST WAY TO END THE HYDRATION PROBLEMS????...is believe it or not, sugar free popsicles. I munch those babies like they are going out of style. They provide your body water and you feel satisfied. I have become a sf popsicle freak and I am 4 months out! If I can help, contact me at melanieokc2002 at aol. Good luck & hang in there!!!
