Question:
I AM 9 DAYS POST OP AND SO THIRSTY.

What do you do to control the thirst. A sip of water, juice or anything elese does nothing to quench my thirst. I am dying to take a big gulp. MY dr says 1 ounce every 5 minutes. I just finished a whole sugar free popsicle in 5 minutes. That seemed to control the thirst. But is a whole popsicle too much? What do u do when your dying for a GIANT gulp of water. I want to cry.    — christina L. (posted on May 21, 2003)

Hi, I'm at the same point (surgery date 5-12) as you and experiencing the same thing. I am thirsty and bumming out about the little tiny sips. I devour the popsicles. I am thinking of getting a hawaiian ice machine because somehow the popsicles seem to go down much easier than the water. Today seems a little better though-can take larger sips. 5 minutes for a popsicle-sounds about right by my standards. Good luck to you.

I went through that initially as well. However, it does get better. Was very dehydrated the first month but kept sipping. Popsicles do work and seemed to be about the only liquid I could keep down. It took me close to four months before I was able to take a good "gulp" of water. It felt great. Everybody is different, you may take less time. Good luck, and keep sipping that water.

I remember the thirst. I sipped constantly. I also keep a cup of ice around for a change. I loved crushed ice and would just let it melt in my mouth. I still do and my surgery was 8/2/02. Just keep sipping, it will pass.

I remember the thirst, it does get better! Try sucking on ice or swishing water in your mouth before you swallow it. I promise this does pass and you will be able to take larger sips soon. Hang in there!

This too shall pass... My doctor allowed my to have Gatorade. It was the only thing that helped me get through that period without getting dehydrated. I poured it into a small cup with A LOT of crushed ice (sort of like a slushie). I would sip it slowly...crunching on the ice as I sipped. It helped me the most, however it didn't make it completely go away. With time you start to drink more and before you know it, the thirstiness is gone. Don't get too discouraged. It does get better...I promise!

Christina, Grab a straw and your water, sit back and nurse it, I was a big water drinker pre-op and thought oh man I won't be able to drink allot of water post op, wrong, I drink so much just as much as I did pre-op.... Hope the thrist goes away..

a whole sugar-free, popcicle is not too much in one sitting. In fact, eat as many as you like - they are considered a liquid and not a food. If they keep you hydrated - go for it! Never heard the 1 ounce every five minutes before, but if he/she says to...I sucked on ice a lot to keep my mouth and throat wet until I could drink more. Didn't take long at all either until I could. Congrats on a successful surgery!

Girl, get you a straw and sip CONSTANTLY. You can sip often not just every 5 minutes. It won't hurt you or your pouch, darlin just don't gulp.

Yikes...a straw? I would not recommend that because of the air it allows you to take in. A popsicle is a great way and I eat them every day...at least 3. Have you tried Crystal lite or something like it? When you put into words ... 1 oz every 5 minutes, it doesn't seem like much and was my limitation for the 2 days in the hospital. But when you add that up over an hour, it's 12 ozs. I think the others had good suggestions in using ice to help out also. good luck!
