Question:
Has anyone else started craving sour foods after surgery?
I am 7 weeks post op and the last 3 weeks I have been craving things like pickles and lemons. I have even drank pickle juice. Has anyone else developed cravings like this after RNY? — Kim N. (posted on March 26, 2003)

I don't know about sour items, but I started craving onions. I absolutely
HATED onions before surgery, now I am always adding onions to my foods.
Kind of weird... huh?

YES! i am 5 months post-op RNY. i crave green olives and cocktail onions,
and i have taken to making my own "tomatoes and vinaigrette" to
eat with my cottage cheese. (olive oil, white wine vinegar, lemon juice,
minced onion, salt & pepper to taste) it is very sour and SO good to
me! i also crave garlic. sure, i liked these things pre-op, but now... i
can't seem to get enough! i wonder why that is? like the previous poster
said, at least it's better than craving chips and cookies. (although i
could really go for a warm slice of French bread right now! but dreaming
about it will have to suffice.) ;)

Yes in deed. I am 7 weeks post op and yesterday I went to the store and
bought the fixins for pickled eggs and beets, then bought some saurekraut
and cooked that. Didn't eat much but enjoyed what I did have. I am glad
to see I am not the only one. My sister thought it was really funny but
glad I didn't crave sweets which I really loved before the surgery. So far
I have not crave anything but the pickled beets. ha ha.

Me Too!!! I am 7 weeks post-op today and you would not believe that I have
been eating pickled okra and pickles EVERY DAY for the last week. I thought
it was a salt thing?? But now that you mention it I think it is the sour!

Yes! I am 20 months post, but do remember those strange cravings...for me
it was dill pickles and green olives. Any ideas what it's all about?? I'm
curious to find out. Another thing I craved early post were tomotoes. I
don't crave those things (but still like them) at this point...

I crave weird things sometimes, too. But I haev actually heard that having
WLS changes some enzymes or something around. And what we assume is our
taste buds changing, is actually something in our stomach/intestine area
that has changed. Wish I knew the exact facts, then I wouldn't sound so
vague and not know what I'm talking about. But I did hear that. lol

That sour pickle thing is legit! At about 6 or 7 weeks out, I went
"pickle crazy." I could not even eat a whole one, but I had to
have a part of one every night. I, too, sometimes just drank the juice.
There are various food cravings that seem to hit most of us at around the
same point out from surgery: V8 juice or tomatoes, watermelon, popcorn -
just to name a few. You'll see.

Yes, yes, yes! Pickles got me through the first year by giving me a snack
that I didn't feel guilty for...I still love them. It got so bad at one
time that during my 1 hour commute home from work, I got a craving so bad I
had to stop at the quickie store and find a pickle just to make it home!
Talk about weird. I ate at least 2 a day, but usually in about 4 sessions.
Be careful of pickles with tough skins. They can get stuck so if it's
tough, just eat the inside...and make sure you get plenty of
water...pickles are high in sodium which can cause fluid retention...don't
want to mask your weight loss by holding onto too much fluid.

I started craving dill pickles about six weeks out. I still do. I also
crave strawberries. Thank goodness it is not cheeseburgers!

another thing that satisfies my sour/salty craving is to put fresh lime (or
lemon) juice in my ice water with a touch of margarita salt (about 1/2 a
lime to 16-24oz water, 1/4 tsp of regular salt or margarita salt, and tons
of ice cubes). it is to die for! (just don't drink too much, the citrus
can make you dump, and the salt can make you retain fluid.) this is such a
refreshing treat to me, since i get so bored with "sweet
everything" from protein drinks and bars and crystal lite, etc. (and i
don't like plain water, so i drink a LOT of diluted crystal lite/SF
koolaid/Pero/herb tea)
