Question:
This is embarassing. I am having surgery next week and deoderant is not working.
I have never had this problem before. I have noticed it the last few weeks. I have tried a few different kinds. I don't want to stink while I am in the hospital. Any ideas? — Kim N. (posted on February 1, 2003)

I understand how embarassing that must be! But I'm willing to bet that the
folks at the hospital are used to much worse things than BO. Try not to
let it worry you as you have more important things ahead. You could also
consult with a dermatologist if it's really bothering you. I wish you a
successful surgery and swift recovery! ~Peace

Yes, like Sunflower Girl, as I have gotten heavier, I seem to have stronger
um...BO. I found a good strong deodorant to be "Tussy". Good
Luck!

Kim, on the day of your surgery you will have to take a shower with a
special antibacterial soap, similar to what surgeons use when they scrub
before surgeries. Don't worry, dear, you will be fine. If you want a
deodorant that works after surgery, try Lady Mitchum, gel deodorant. It is
great. By the way, after the surgery your sense of smell will be greatly
enhanced! I mean, things that never bothered you at all before, i.e., the
garbage can or even your home, will seem to smell. It is kind of like the
way pregnancy makes your nose more sensitive. Don't worry about it because
it will diminish within a few weeks. Lots of us think we stink or that we
have a body odor after surgery. It is common so just be assured that you
will be fine. God bless!

This is directed to the previous poster, Marilyn. You said "on the
day of your surgery you will have to take a shower with a special
antibacterial soap". This may be true for your surgeon, but not
necessarily for *all* surgeons. I had no such requirement and had no
problems with any post-op infections...JR

Dr. Dean Edell who hosts a medical talk show on the radio told a caller to
use straight rubbing alcohol.

JOHN- your were washed with anitbacterial soap- your faciltiy just did it
for you, probably after you were put under-
They would not open your abdomen with dong a betadine scrub!
My hospital had me do it the morning of my surgery at home before I left
the for the hospital and did not wear any deodorants!

Stacie - I realize that there is a surgical prep - I am not a total idiot
*G*. Betadine isn't always used, though. Some people are allergic to it
(like my wife). I was just pointing out to Marilyn that not every surgeon
requires the patient to take a shower with special antibacterial soap on
the day of surgery...JR

I have that problem when there is build up of left-over deodorant, after
regular washing. I use a body scrub every other day, and that helps a LOT.
Just scrub really well with the scrubby stuff to take off the old dead
cells and build up. I bet that helps!

Try scrubbing your under arms with the antibacterial liquid soap while
showering. It should get rid of any residue, kill off the bacteria which
is usually the cause of odor. Periodically I have the same problem as you.
Not sure why? But it does the trick. Afterwards I use a good stick
deoderant. And showing before surgery with the antibacterial soap at home
before heading to the hospital is a good idea regardless of whether or not
your doc requires it.

Thank you John for pointing out my error. I am sure it made Kim feel a lot
better. Kim, as Shelly said, it is a good idea to shower with a good
antibacterial soap whether your surgeon requires it or not. Try Liquid
Dial Gold. It is great. John, why are you so negative to us all? We are
all on the same side! LOL or trying to get to the "other side".

In high school I had a horrible sweating problem. No amount of deodorant
made a difference. I had to change shirts in the middle of the day because
of the rings under my arms. I asked my PA and she wrote me a prescription
for something called DrySol. You put it on at night every other day, wash
it off in the morning - wear your normal deodorant all day. Works like a
charm! (It kinda made me itch though, but didn't bother me after I fell
asleep.)

Very simple answer. Use Mitchum. It usually comes in a green bottle. You
can get a role on or stick. I KNOW this will work for you. KTA
