Question:
I am on prinivil and a water pill for my high blood pressure.

I weigh 266 at 5ft 3in how long do you think it will take me after surgery to hopefully get off of these meds?    — Kim N. (posted on December 29, 2002)

My doctor took me off the water pill when I was 1 month post-op because I was having to drink 90 to 100 ozs. a day just to stay hydrated. I have lost 49 lbs. at a little over 3 months and I have been able to cut the blood pressure dose in half. I am a smoker also, so that may be why I can't get off of it yet, I don't know. My doctor predicted about 4-5 months before I can be completely off of them.

I am scheduled for jan. 10, 2003. i currently take 300mg of avalide and 240mg covera for blood pressure. my primary care physician recommended me to come in one month after surgery to start "weening" me off my medication. I have been on bp medicine since my early 20's (8 years) so I am anxious also to get off this stuff since it makes me feel so very tired and irritable. good luck and god bless. April

I am off all blood pressure meds, except for a diuretic. I cannot seem to get the extra fluid out of my calves and feet, so am still taking it. I was taking a very small amount of an ace inhibitor, but it was making me dizzy and light-headed, so my PCP told me to quit taking it. She had just checked my BP and found it to be normal. I'm seeing her again in a couple of weeks and will see then how it's doing. I think most people who have the surgery are able to greatly reduce, if not eliminate many of the meds they were taking pre-op. I am no longer taking any cholesterol lowering drugs either.

i was taking 3 bp controllers for 7 years pre-op. one of them was prinivil. my bp was 170/100. the last time i took ANY bp meds was the day before surgery. my bp had dropped to normal 3 hours after surgery & stayed there. my surgeon said not to take any until i saw my cardiologist. i saw the cardio the next week & he took me off bp meds totally. my bp has stabilized to 114/72 consistently since one week post op. be advised...this is NOT the norm. everyone is different.
