Question:
Help HORRIBLE Diarrhea will it ever end?????

I am 8 days post op from open rny. I am on an all liquid diet until next week. I am having terrible cramps and diarrhea. My surgeon says this is normal and will subside???? I am taking the maximum daily amount of Imodium which slows it down a little but doesn't stop it. I literally spend day and night in the bathroom. Has anyone had this happen to them????? Does it get better???? Is it because of all the liquids??? I still have my gallbladder which looked perfect so it isn't that. Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.    — lovemonterey (posted on September 27, 2002)

Yes diarrea during the liquid phase is common. I would call your surgeon back. If the diarrea is that bad it can lead to dehydration, a bad scene. There are prescription anti diarrea meds that could stop niagara falls:)

YES! This is horrible, but it will go away. I had it really bad for about two weeks, so bad I hurt! After it went away, I was constipated for a while and now everything is generally fine. I am so sorry you're going through this, but, this too shall pass. Hee hee.

Be really careful, diarrhea is not common. It sometimes does happen but it is not common. You could have an infection in your intestines. Did you recieve antibiotics while you were in the hospital? Some times this can kill the natural flora which can lead to an infection/diarrhea. Call your Dr. they can do a stool culture.

All most every one ive met after surgery has had diarrhea during the first 2 weeks think about it your only puting liquid in your body so it pretty much just going to shoot straight thru ya. It normal I totally agree with bob. Don't worry about it.

Actually, I had the opposite. I didn't go at all for the two weeks that I was on the liquid diet. Even further out my movements were a week apart until recently - when I started eating Kashi Go Lean for breakfast. Gotta love that fiber *G*...JR (open RNY 07/17 -84 lbs)

Are you drinking milk? What are the sugar g in your liquid products? Either of those can cause unrelenting diarrhea. You might try ditching all milk for 24 hours and see what happens. You can just drink more water during that time, and that's not a bad thing at all.

In addition to the questions Michelle asked, I'd like to know if you are on a iron supplement? If so, is it ferrous sulfate? I was put on it and had horrible diarrhea as a result.
