Question:
I recently had a friend who had a consultation
with a surgeon who told her that their was another WLS called Bilio Pancreatic Diversion, and that it was better then having the RNY Gastric Bypass. He told her that with this surgery she would be able to go back to eating whatever she wants after 18 months, and with the RNY you'll need to get it redone in 15-20 years. Has anyone else heard of that? — Stacy I. (posted on August 1, 2002)

I had considered this surgery first. But the more I learned the scarier it
seemed to me. They bypass 40 percent of the intestine. If you get really
sick with the flu and can't eat, you could get dangerously
thin.

I'm sure this is a good surgery for some. But
tell you freind to know exactly what she's getting into
first.
Sandi

Although the weight loss tends to be greater with this surgery and you
don't dump or get things stuck in the stoma, this surgery wasn't for me.
Like the last poster said, they bypass way more intestine with the BPD/DS.
If you are not very consistent with taking your vitamins, it could lead to
nutritional deficiencies.

I had a BPD/DS in Oct. 2001. To date, I have lost 101 lbs. Yes, I take
vitamins 3 times a day and have to eat about 100 gms of protein per day.
However, there is no late regain. I can eat anything and don't dump as the
BPD/DS leaves the pyloric sphincter intact. Contact me at
[email protected] if you want more info.
